Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, acknowledging public frustration over illegal immigration, said Tuesday that the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.
"We have decided to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem and solve it once and for all," Chertoff said during a breakfast meeting with reporters.
The NEW YORK TIMES is planning a front page placement for the Chertoff comments on Wednesday, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.
The unusually blunt assessment by the nation's top immigration official comes after governors in New Mexico and Arizona recently declared a border-related "state of emergency," citing a surge in smuggling and violence associated with the steady flow of illegal immigrants.

Like I wrote, voting for Democrats is even worse today than for Republicans but what I am finding very uncomfortable about the GOP in CA is this:
-- they withhold/fail/refuse to provide voters with explanations about their plans and intentions, leaving us to expect things that they later reveal they intended either the opposite or not anything related
-- they offer candidates that are marginal at best and actually discourage voting as a Republican as to candidate leaving many of us to try to continue to exercise the 'faith vote' as to party only (better than not voting)
-- they aren't strong and persistent and effective enough about conservative concerns and embarrass voters afterward when important issues become secondary to the eventual negative campaigning in CA by the persistently negative Democrats
That's for starters. As I wrote, the Demos are even worse so I'm not even going there but the GOP has a lot of work to do in the sincerity department if it wants to maintain any voter support in the state other than hardcore party-liners who want what the Demos want anyway: bigger government, lax security ("too expensive" and "hurts the bottom line") and just about anyone here in the state from wherever because they're source of cheap labor ("helps our bottom line").
Depressing place, California.
We need real leadership and real conservatives, and we need it real soon.

And, I also think that what happens in CA is very important to naitional politics (d'oh) even now more than ever. The state's like a bank for the DNC and otherwise Control Central for their Media.
The educational system here alone churns out little liberals like nowhere else and just look at what it costs to make the Hollywood films spawning more of their dogma: all those millions each (huge, just huge amounts of money even to make a ruinous title) and yet, consider where ALL THAT MONEY comes from and so reliably.
The state needs an overhaul because both parties here are routinely disappointing. But the state continues to be so important to national politics due to the sheer size of the place as to population. Not a good thing, considering.
During and after our historical recall election, I was pumped. Watching Grey Davis get thrown out on his head in front of the state capital was great. I was waiting for the momentum to build with Schwarzenegger but it seemed to cave. I think he's too closely tied with the two big box party's.
We need real change. We need a departure from the BS, real bad.

While I liked Bill Simon, last gubernatorial, he appears now to be straightforward on camera but during the run for the governor's, was entirely tinnny...meaning, he was so uptight and unspoken that people were suspicious. In effect, he did not make a successful campaigner and just look, he lost. Now he's featured on broadcasts and has good and important things to say so maybe he should of considered a Senate race, dunno.
But, as to Congress seats, Tancredo from CO and Gilchrist from CA -- two people who are supported well by many as to what they're pursuing for the nation and respective states -- have already been trounced by many of the harder core GOP bloggers, to my shock, not even accurately, either. There appears a real NEED by the GOP to discredit these two, individually and together, and that's what I was earlier describing: that the GOP does not explain positions well, leaving voters to feel both uninformed when voting and later disillusioned when we/they realize we voted for issues that are not being furhtered afterward.
If the GOP could improve in any way, it would be that and that is that they'd connect with voters sincerely and explain these positions before launching into denigrating mode for those who they feel are representing other positions. Becuase just launching into denigration mode without explanation (does anyone REALLY understand WHY Bush wants this "guest worker program" and how) leaves people disillusioned and to put it bluntly, angry, feeling cheated.
It does not make any sense to me why Tancredo and Gilchrist are belittled by some among the GOP, and mostly my lack of understanding arises from the GOP not explaining why they have belittled them, and continue to.
Explain the position, let us voters in on whatever the Top Secret Party hullabaloo is. But to just drag people down because they have ideas and offer solutions, is indecent.
They are a real threat. Lots of money being made off the never ending flood of cheap labor. Business likes it, but we are forced to pay in many ways. Follow the money. Most regular folks have had it with this profit before country.

Good point, and I think the reason there are no legitimate reasons given, is because there are none.

Again, they are a threat to the power of the "business as usual" crowd. Stopping the flood of cheap labor will affect some bottom lines. They'll be making a lot of noise to see that that doesn't happen.

Agree. And again, there is a lot of special interest pulling their strings.
That would mean a linear border structure, making scannable SS cards or ID's for citizens, allowing employers who have hired or now hire illegals a grace period to verify employee status, then increasing penalties to 60% of their gross yearly income, and closing the 14th Amendment attraction of anchor babies.
Any "plan" must be comprehensive in nature, but the most immediate need is a linear border structure.

In the old days people off the boat wanted to become Americans, to learn proper English (or close to it).
The school systems of Mexico Central and South America, by & large, teach (brainwash) young pupils America is the problem, thus the old respect has disappeared.
Those illegally sneaking across the border, especially from South of the border, only wish to use America, never really having any desire to become real Americans.
Cubanos for the most part, having experienced the horrors of Castro's repressive communist state understand freedom and have no desire to allow the left-wing control over local political races.
The biggest threat stems from al-Qaida terrorist attempting to blend in with other illegal aliens.
The Bush team has as much credibility on border issues as Clinton does on chastity.
They'll call it something else. That will fool us.
What flavor is the koolaid today?
*Real Estate -- selling them houses; renting apartments (Yes, illegals are buying houses).
* Manufacturing -- huge numbers of manufacturers and use illegal alien labor.
*Construction -- huge numbers of construction contractors use illegal alien labor.
* Retail Outlets -- make large amounts of cash money selling to illegal alien clients.
* Agriculture -- huge numbers of agricultural operations use illegal alien labor.
* Janitorial -- many people use illegal alien labor for instutional cleaning and for residential cleaning.
All of the individuals who have for years been making huge sums of money off of these people have much more influence on politicans than YOU.
Law enforcement and the judicial system also have "job security" as well from illegal immigrants. Not to mention security industry as well, insurance companys for "uninsured motorists" on and on. Teachers have a big interest in it too.
Warm bodies in the class mean more state money.
I have watched this problem since the early eighties. Nobody seems serious about it. I am hopeful with the renewed interests. But very skeptical. The minutemen seem to be doing the most good.

Why would it even come to that? Wouldn't the private landowner gladly relinquish the border strip, for a wall or fence?
His own labor force includes no illegals, because he wouldn't hire them. Right?
Excellent idea. Is there really such a thing a a citizen's arrest? Could Sheriff Joe Arpio help set up "beds" for the detainees? I think we're going to have to solve our problems ourselves (peacefully and legally) because our elected officials seem to have lost the will or the ability to respond to the citizens of this country.
