All these doom and gloom environmentalists will be livid if global warming causes more sea ice, rather than the catastrophic melting of polar ice like they suspect. It looks like, to me, that there are many feedback mechanisms that regulate our climate and only a fraction of them are known and fewer are truly understood in detail.

The other point is that the article seems to imply increase ice at the south pole offset by decreased ice at the north pole. That would indeed be a good thing for shipping and transportation - a safe and reliable northwest passage!

"may be an indication that climate change processes may have different impact on different areas of the globe."

IOW, it all balances out in the end.

Ya know what gets me...

First off, I am NOT a Global Warming denier, like most here on FR. I think that something is going on, although no one really knows what, how much, why, and what we can really do about it if indeed we should bother..

Now having said that, it seems that any phenomena that could be seen as countering the GW claims, is twisted around to become MORE evidence of GW...

Miss Elk (John Cleese, as a very prim lady): Miss.
Host: Miss Anne Elk, who is an expert on the...
Elk: No, no, no, Anne Elk.
Host: What?
Elk: Anne Elk, not Anne Expert.
Host: No, no, I was saying that you, Miss Elk, were an, A.N. not A.N.N.E.,
expert...
Elk: Oh!
Host: ...on elks - I'm sorry, on dinosaurs.
Elk: Yes, I certainly am, Chris, how very true, my word yes!
Host: Now, Miss Elk - Anne - you have a new theory about the brontosaurus.
Elk: Could I just say, Chris, for one moment that I have a new theory about
the brontosaurus?
Host: Er... exactly. What is it?
Elk: Where?
Host: No, no, no. What is your theory?
Elk: Oh, what is my theory?
Host: Yes.
Elk: Oh what is my theory, that it is. Yes, well you may well ask, what is my
theory.
Host: (slightly impatient) I am asking.
Elk: And well you may. Yes my word you may well ask what it is, this theory
of mine. Well, this theory that I have--that is to say, which is mine--
...is mine.
Host: (more impatient) I know it's yours. What is it?
Elk: Where? Oh, what is my theory?
Host: Yes!
Elk: Oh, my theory that I have follows the lines I am about to relate.
(Coughs) Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem.
Host: Oh God.
Elk: Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Ahem.
Ahem. Ahem. [Impatient noises from Host] The Theory, by A. Elk. That's
A for Anne, it's not by a elk.
Host: Right....
Elk: This theory which belongs to me is as follows. Ahem. Ahem. This is how
it goes. Ahem. The next thing that I am about to say is my theory.
Ahem. Ready?
(Host moans)
Elk: The Theory by A. Elk brackets Miss brackets. My theory is along the
following lines.
Host: Oh God.
Elk: All brontosauruses are thin at one end, much MUCH thicker in the middle,
and then thin again at the far end. That is the theory that I have and
which is mine, and what it is too.
Host: That's it, is it?
Elk: Right, Chris.
Host: Well, Anne, this theory of yours seems to have hit the nail on the head.
Elk: And it's mine.
Host: (ironical) Thank you for coming along to the studio.
Elk: My pleasure, Chris.
Host: Er...Britain's newest wasp farm...
Elk: It's been a lot of fun.
Host: ...opened last week...
Elk: Saying what my theory is.
Host: Yes, thank you.
Elk: And whose it is.
Host: Yes. ...opened last week...
Elk: I have another theory.
Host: Not today, thank you.
Elk: My theory number two, which is the second theory that I have. Ahem!
This theory...
Host: Oh look...shut up!
Elk: ...is what I am about to say...
Host: Oh please shut up!
Elk: ...which, with what I have said, are the two theories that are mine and
belong to me.
Host: Look, if you don't shut up I shall shoot you.
Elk: Ahem! My brace of theories, which I possess the ownership of, which
belongs to me...

Evidence to my belief that "weather" is evidence of global warming.

if they want to cut down on "hot air" all they have to do is tape a liberals mouth shut and the prroblem will work itself out.

They also seem to ignore the effect of the magnetic field on warming/cooling factors and how the field actually flips polarity over a period of time which leaves us less protected from solar energy during times of flux change.

The earth has warmed and cooled over long periods of time even before man set foot on it. There have been climate changes so devastating in the past that 90% of the species living at the time were wiped out.

As such, climate change could very well be natural processes, not man made. Even if man did stop all pollution, there would be no halting these processes in any event, and we would be worse off because we'd deny technology to help us deal with it.

Regards, Ivan

So is global warming causing the ice to thicken at the poles? Or could it be that mounting ice at the poles is causing global warming? The earths way of trying to rid itself of the excess ice.

"First off, I am NOT a Global Warming denier, like most here on FR."

Its not necessarily a matter of whether or not its getting warmer, its a matter of whether of not its "our" (mankind's) fault.

There have always been ice ages and warmer periods.

I think that when you speak of "GW deniers" what you're really referring to are people who deny that global warming is a) caused primarily by human industrial activity; and b) is a Bad Thing that will Kill Us All.

There are many here who note that larger warming and cooling trends have been recorded (or interpreted for pre-recorded time) that are obviously quite independent of human industrial activity.

Others note the fruitfulness often associated with warming trends and question the predicted cataclysmic effect of any global warming.

This article speaks to that angle; if the effect of warming isn't "and the ice shall melt and the seas shall rise and the cities shall flood" but instead that *more* ice is created, then there's no need to panic and sign control of our economy over to bureaucrats in Brussels.

You can't do one end without doing the other (methane dontchaknow).

Of course the resulting explosion would be quite messy, but perhaps worth it. ;-/

Just out of curiousity, do you believe that global climate is supposed to remain static now that human beings are here?

You have heard of Ice Ages, right? And you do understand that we are overdue for the next Ice Age, right?

Last week, I read an article about the antarctic ice shelf thinning and breaking off, all because of global warming. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/keyword?k=iceshelf

Now this week, its getting thicker, and again its because of global warming. Which is it? Getting thicker or melting? And either way its still from global warming? Next their going to say that global warming has been happening for the last 100 years and its all Bushes fault.

When I was in high school in the late '70's, the buzz saying then was global cooling. Now its global warming. which is it?

You're probably getting the message by now, but (most) people on FR don't believe in anthropogenic Global Warming. Freepers are (mostly) well aware that the Earth is constantly in a state of periodic climate flux.

I agree with you. There is evidence that suggests that eath has gone back and forth between climate extremes... therefore, global warming would be a natural phenomenon and we couldn't really do anything to stop it.
