Bikers reminisce at recruit graduation

MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO, Calif. (August 19, 2005) -- Harley Davidson motorcycles roared through the hallways of Pendleton Hall and bellowed down the streets of the depot while Marine veterans cruised down memory lane Aug. 12.

Seventeen former Marines from the Leatherneck Motorcycle Club, California Chapter, came from all over the state to witness recruit graduation and walk around the base where many of them trained decades before.

To be a part of the Leatherneck Motorcycle Club, one must first be an active duty, reserve, or honorably discharged U.S. Marine or Navy corpsman who has served with a fleet Marine force unit, according to club officials.

"Basically what we are is a bunch of former Marines and corpsmen who believe once a Marine, always a Marine," said William Mosby, chapter leader and spokesman.

The motorcycle Marines sat in the stands as distinguished guests at Company B's recruit graduation ceremony and watched the Corps' newest devil dogs march across Shepherd Memorial Drill Field.

"Lots of guys wanted to see a graduation," said Robert Rodriguez, who graduated from the depot in January 1987. "I have been away (from the depot) for roughly 18 years. For a lot of the other guys, it's been more than 30."

Motorcycle club members try to cruise one ride a month to see different aspects of the Marine Corps - monuments, different bases and places of Corps historical significance.

According to Rodriguez, Marines just get together to ride. The camaraderie makes it fun, he said.

While watching the graduation, many thought back to their days on the grinder.

According to Rodriguez, Co. B's marching stood out, and he said one will not find better Marine Corps drill anywhere else.

The chapter's next destination is the Children's Hospital Orange County run. To keep track on the bikers' progress, visit www.caleathernecks.org.

"I think I saw a couple of rice grinders in the lineup!"

Some Marines like to go fast, stop quickly and take corners briskly.

Try it, you might like it. ;)

This anecdotal about my sisters experience in the Marines in the 70s:
The Marines had classes for the females on how to apply make-up...

I still laugh when she tells that story...

I had a Kawasaki KX400 motocrosser, one of the best all around dirt bikes I ever owned.

I installed WorksPerformance rears shocks and air front forks and a 4 gal clear plastic fuel tank.

I am a proud patch wearing member of this club. sadly I missed this run. I am still recovering from an encounter with a drunk in a cage 2 years ago.
