E Pluribus Unum? (Not in Hawaii)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 8/17/05 | SLATE GORTON AND HANK BROWN

Posted on 08/17/2005 11:07:13 AM PDT by NathanBookman

The Senate is poised to sanction the creation of a racially exclusive government by and for Native Hawaiians who satisfy a blood test. The new race-based sovereign that would be summoned into being by the so-called Akaka Bill would operate outside the U.S. Constitution and the nation's most cherished civil rights statutes. Indeed, the champions of the proposed legislation boast that the new Native Hawaiian entity could secede from the Union like the Confederacy, but without the necessity of shelling Fort Sumter.

The Akaka Bill classifies citizens by race, defying the express provisions of the 14th Amendment. It also rests on a betrayal of express commitments made by its sponsors a decade ago, and asserts as true many false statements about the history of Hawaii. It should be defeated.

The Akaka Bill's justification rests substantially on a 1993 Apology Resolution passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton when we were members of the Senate representing the states of Washington and Colorado. (We voted against it.) The resolution is cited by the Akaka Bill in three places to establish the proposition that the U.S. perpetrated legal or moral wrongs against Native Hawaiians that justify the race-based government the legislation would erect. These citations are a betrayal of the word given to us--and to the Senate--in the debate over the Apology Resolution. ... The U.S. Constitution scrupulously protects the liberties and freedom of Native Hawaiians. It always will. Native Hawaiians have never been treated as less than equal by the U.S. Their economic success matches that of non-Native Hawaiians. Intermarriage is the norm. Sen. Inouye himself boasted in 1994 that Hawaii was "one of the greatest examples of a multiethnic society living in relative peace." In other words, e pluribus unum is a formula that works. We should not destroy it.

Or, as that dunderhead Al Gore said during the 2000 presidential campaign, "From one, many." The drooling lapdog press refused to comment upon their boy's stupidity.

If they want to become just another island tourist economy, have at it. Don't expect military presence or subsidy of any kind, though.

Sad.

Will the new Hawaiian nation be able to practice slavery (common in Polynesian society)? And human sacrifice? In the Hawaiian royal family siblings often married. Will they bring that practice back too? How about not being allowed to walk in the same footprints as the king, a big taboo? Idiots! All this to be able to run casinos.....

This has been pushed by a handful of liberal/idiot (but I repeat myself) activists. It may have some support in certain circles but it has not gone up for a vote, unlike, say, Statehood.

Bush has said he will sign I believe.

Clinton's awfulness keeps on giving.

When there isn't one Hawaiian with more than 1/16th Hawaiian blood, how can they even think of this?

There's no such thing as a "pureblood" on the islands.

What? Are they after casinos? Is why they're doing it? Same as the american Indians.

Methinks they are after the Military reservations. Camp Smith, PACFLT sits on top of a dead volcano, Makalapa Crater, propbably soon to be declared a sacred burial site or somesuch.

I say,, pull out all of our American companies that operate in Hawaii , pull out and economic help the Hawaiians get from the US Federal government, pull out our military bases, and let them become another Cuber.
I say, let them float on their own, and have them pay back what ever loans they got from the Federal US government.
They will be the first ones to blame the Federal US government if that place turns into a hell hole like Cuber.

While visiting Maui I noticed in a guidebook that there was a heiau or Hawaiian temple platform not far from the main city. I decided to go visit. I was surprised to find that the entrance to the small park where the platform was located was behind some houses. The platform was on a small hill. The hill was surrounded by an unattractive industrial area.

In the days before the Hawaiian religion was outlawed (in the early 1800's), images of idols were placed on the platform, facing the Haleakala volcano. It seemed to me that the site had some important archaeological significance. Now it appeared that few people ever visited the park. Someone had obviously been doing some shooting there. A sign said that the care for the park had been turned over to a group interested in Hawaiian culture. It didn't appear that this group had done much for the park. I was left with the impression that the portion of Hawaiians who actually care about their cultural history is pretty low.

I too have learned over that last couple of years from talking to folks, or watching documentaries.. or just general information.. that their culture, isn't always tended to by the youth.

At least not as much as many would see fit. And in many cases, as is across the world, if the Natives don't practice and teach that which matters to them. Than what is lost, is their fault. We as a people only get out of our lives what we put into them.

And if the Hawaiins aren't seeing drastic results to their taste, maybe it's time they put their minds where their mouths are!?

Maybe? Hmmm?

Those questions are popular but not discussed in "mixed company". This latest attempt to extort money from the US Treasury is politics at its worse.
Hawaii has been an example of the blending of races. It was never financially beneficial to be one race or another, until the ugly head of politics arose. Don't get me wrong, things were never perfect but as good as it would get in an imperfect world.
Liberal socialism at the University of Hawaii, learned over the years from academians like Ward Churchill, foments the "wrongs" done to Hawaiians in revisionist history. Pandering by politicians professing to advocate "righting the wrongs" done to the Hawaiian people has now polarized and is destroying this melting pot.
Don't worry about the traditions or practices of old Hawaii, there are no commoners left. All Hawaiians are now "royalty". They cannot compete in open society unless they receive favorable condideration because of their race, cannot attend school unless give free or reduced tuition, qualify for home mortgages unless someone gives them the land for $1.00/year for 99 years or do anything else unless the have their 160+ race based federal monetary programs - they say.

Funny... but so true!

The problem with this bill that it is racist at it's core. So I figure we should give them a taste of the same problem we "main lander" have. Here's the kicker they have to play by the same PC rules.
