"If I Got My News From the Newspapers I'd be Pretty Depressed As Well"
Mark Finkelstein over at Newsbusters reported this morning that Matt Lauer got a surprise answer from a soldier on a recent trip to Iraq. After asking about morale, a few soldiers told him that morale was good. Like any good morning TV show journalist, Lauer was skeptical:
LAUER: Don't get me wrong, I think you're probably telling the truth, but there might be a lot of people at home wondering how that might be possible with the conditions you're facing and with the insurgent attacks you're facing... What would you say to people who doubt that morale could be that high?
CAPTAIN SHERMAN POWELL: Well sir, I'd tell you, if I got my news from the newspapers I'd be pretty depressed as well. Powell said that he knows the media have a hard time getting out in Iraq and seeing the improvements, but that he's "satisfied" and "proud" of the work the United States is doing in Iraq.
Don't you also love how Lauer says, "What would you say to people who doubt that morale could be that high?" when he means, "What would you say to Matt Lauer, who doubts that morale could be that high?"

What Capt Powell wanted to say...Well sir if I got my news from Network TV I'd be pretty depressed as well. Powell said that he knows the media have a hard time getting out in Iraq and seeing the improvements, but that he's "satisfied" and "proud" of the work the United States is doing in Iraq.
LOL! Hooah!
Rush talking about this now...
Sound as though he is taking a cue from Rummy. That's the way to put it!
Rush is discussing this item, and in teasing it even made use of my line about Lauer committing the lawyer's mistake of asking a witness a question to which he doesn't know the answer!!
Someone should induct that fine young man into the Royal Freeper Order of the Public Zot.
The Captain should have said: "I can see how a lot of people have low morale because of the MSM and your show. However if you guys would be honest with the public, I'm sure morale would rise with the people at home and over here."
Don't be so hard on Matt. His wife's ditched him, and his hair plugs aren't even.
Poor guy.
It seems to me that Lauer is incapable of understanding how someone might be happy even though they are engaged in a very difficult job. He probably thinks the morale of firemen is very low when they are fighting a particularly stubborn fire on a hot day. He probably thinks the morale of football players is very low when they get tackled by a 300 pound nose guard. He probably thinks the morale of police officers is very low when they run down and arrest a violent criminal. He is a typical limousine liberal with no clue about what motivates real America.
RUSH just spoke about this, bttt
ping
Shoot - I've been in meetings all afternoon and missed it.
EXCELLENT!!!!!
And they even "tried" to pull the answer out of him that they wanted to hear.
Red6
Either the media starts to fix this thing or they are going to be fighting more than the disrespect of the American people, they are going to be facing outright RAGE!
Every soldier who I have seen or heard being interviewed is a credit to the military and the good old U.S. of A. -- professional and courteous.
"Nothing But Communists"......
How damn funny is that.
Yep, Al Katie and Bin Lauer.
I'm damn glad that a Soldier called him on that.
