Japan: many casualties in a very violent earthquake
TOKYO - a very violent earthquake, a magnitude of 6,8 on the open scale of Richter, occurred Tuesday at the end of the morning in Japan, making many casualties, according to first information's.
An alarm with the tsunami was launched but the waves remained of very modest width, announced the Japanese weather Agency.
Many people were wounded in the area of Sendai (northern of Japan), indicated service Kyodo the news, quoting the first-aid organizations of the city. But the authorities have on their side specified that they always carried out checks to establish the assessment.
According to first information's, at least 80 people would have been wounded when the roof of a gymnasium broke down in Sendai.
The epicentre of the seism which occurred with 11H46 local (02H46 GMT), was localised in the Pacific Ocean, with a score of kilometers to broad of the prefecture of Miyagi (northern).
The circulation of the high-speed trains and the activity of a nuclear thermal power station were stopped by precaution.
The jolt very lengthily and was strongly felt in Tokyo, to some 300 km of the place of the earthquake. The turns of the downtown area of the capital nippone wavered, noted AFP.
A cell of crisis was installation at the seat of the Prime Minister to face the situation.
"I was frightened by the violence of the jolt", declared with AFP Wakako Suzuki, 31 years, which lives the prefecture of Miyagi.
"I was on the first floor of the house, and I am sudden setting to pitch. And after there was long and dreadful series of horizontal jolts ", it added.
"My first-aid kit fell from the wall cupboard. I saw the neighbors leaving their houses suddenly ", it also testified.
Another living of Miyagi was lunching when the ground started to tremble.
"After having heard alarm with the tsunami, we left to look at the water level in our well which is supposed to increase in the event of tsunami. But the level had not moved ", it declared.
"a Little crockery fell from the racks. But it was all. We are again lunching ", it continued.
The seismic activity has been particularly intense for several months in Japan, including in Tokyo.
Last 24 July, Tokyo had already been touched by a violent one earthquake magnitude 6, which had made light casualties and property damages.
Japan is with the junction of four tectonic plates, undergoing thousands of jolts each year. The Archipelago records approximately 20% of the earthquakes more the violent ones in the world.
Hope you are okay.
Prayers for the injured...
And ummm, where was Karl Rove when this occured?
I'm sure he had something to do with this.
And a 20 inch Tsunami is like me diving into a pool
Urgent Headline News
Landslide reported in Tome, Miyagi Pref.: police
YIKES there is report off Fox news that 80 people are injuried because of roof collapse in this part of Japan
I wonder if that was painful?
Actually... a tsunami that is only a foot or three at sea, can be enormous when it finds shore.
We should know pretty soon whether there is any tsunami from this one. But it is the sort of thing that you just never know right away. It's not the size of the shake that is so important as is the *shape* of the movement.
Yeah where is Karl Rove tonight
LOL!
Quake hits northern Japan, injuries reported

Yes, the Sumatra quake was the third largest quake of the last 105 years.
However we really only have actual quake measurements for about 100 years and really accurate ones for perhaps 30-40 years.
Actually, of the 12 largest quakes since 1900, SEVEN of them occured in a 15 year period from 1950 to 1965. There's interesting debate over whether that is random or not.
This is very interesting considering according to the calendar this coming Friday there shall indeed be a full moon.
Do you feel gravitational pull is in any way interconnected with major earthquakes? I wonder if there is any available credible data out there on this subject?
Japan is after all is one of the world's most active seismic regions. As I stated previously in this thread I firmly believe the Tokyo & Yokohama are heading for their version of the 'big one' and when it takes place there will be broad-based adverse international economic ramifications, specifically with Japan based stocks traded overseas. Just what we need ....
My prayers for those people.
Oh any tsunami would have already hit Japan some time ago.
Upgraded to 7.2. Oh boy!
You have to keep in mind that any day is no more than 7 days from either a new or full moon, of course.
It's very easy to do a statistical study, and it's been done, and there's no statistical relationship of large earthquakes and moon phases at all, especially on land.
However there ARE some lunar effects on earthquakes; small quakes in volcanic areas do increase with tides (the daily tides, not monthly phases) and there's some limited effect on moderate sized underwater quakes.
