"Other thing to note is like most large quakes, it wasn't particularly near a new or full moon. Problem is the moon-obsessives only note the quakes that are on or very near new or full moons :-)"

This is very interesting considering according to the calendar this coming Friday there shall indeed be a full moon.

Do you feel gravitational pull is in any way interconnected with major earthquakes? I wonder if there is any available credible data out there on this subject?

Japan is after all is one of the world's most active seismic regions. As I stated previously in this thread I firmly believe the Tokyo & Yokohama are heading for their version of the 'big one' and when it takes place there will be broad-based adverse international economic ramifications, specifically with Japan based stocks traded overseas. Just what we need ....

You have to keep in mind that any day is no more than 7 days from either a new or full moon, of course.

It's very easy to do a statistical study, and it's been done, and there's no statistical relationship of large earthquakes and moon phases at all, especially on land.

However there ARE some lunar effects on earthquakes; small quakes in volcanic areas do increase with tides (the daily tides, not monthly phases) and there's some limited effect on moderate sized underwater quakes.
