Majority Leader Signals Republican Establishment's Desire for Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) praised Majority Leader Tom Delay's endorsement of key components of his immigration reform and border security bill, the REAL GUEST Act of 2005.

The Houston Chronicle reported today that Delay favored withholding federal funding from so-called sanctuary cities that do not cooperate with federal law enforcement in identifying and prosecuting illegal aliens. Tancredo has proposed amendments to the Commerce, Justice, Science, State appropriations bill and the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities in each of the past three sessions of Congress. The REAL GUEST Act requires the Attorney General to certify that localities do not have sanctuary policies before transmitting federal funds.

Delay told a gathering of Republicans in Fort Bend County that, "Before Congress takes any significant legislation, we must secure our nation's borders." The REAL GUEST Act requires measurable border security goals be met before any guest worker program is implemented, including the following: the absconder rate for illegal aliens is less than five percent, 80 percent of visa overstays are located and removed within one year of overstaying, all non-citizens are issued biometric travel documents, and 10,000 new border patrol agents are deployed.

Delay also said that he "would support legislation even stricter than Cornyn's." He said he is against guest workers bringing their families and that children born to illegal aliens should not automatically become U.S. citizens. Tancredo's REAL GUEST Act is the only bill of the big three (McCain-Kennedy, Cornyn-Kyl and Tancredo) that prohibits families coming with guest workers and blocks birthright citizenship.

"I'm encouraged by Tom Delay's remarks. It's good to hear my party's leadership paying attention to the base and getting serious about immigration reform," said Tancredo. "The President and now the majority leader have said that we need to address immigration and border security. Seven years after taking to the House floor night after night, I can say we've come a long way."

Which parts of that legislation can you live without? When it comes out of committee it will be short a few limbs. Figure out which ones were never intended to stay in and answer with those so you don't look bad when they are axed.

Hispanics wont vote for parties that try to deport hispanics.

I have seen a lot of support by LEGAL hispanics who do not support ILLEGAL hispanics. They stood in line, they paid the price and they are no more supportive of illegal immigration than you or I. Legal hispanics are possibly the total answer to this illegal immigration problem.

But the GOP no longer holds those core values that we do - smaller government, lower taxes, stronger defense (borders included), FAIR TRADE, etc.

The GOP is now the globalization party, I'm sorry to say. We've been sold a false bill of goods with GWB. Welcome to the "level playing field of global economics". Sorry about your job, we're selling our middle class to _____________. (Insert nation of your choice.)

I wish that were true but the hispanic vote and how and why it has moved and continues to move tells a very different story.

Wow, a Tancredo press release (guess he is in need of more $$$) that is most likely a twisting of the facts. Tancredo has learned very well the skill of manipulating his donors.

In reality, the Kyl/Cornyn bill is not all that dissimilar from Tancredo's but in Tancredo's mind, the only bills about immigration in all of Congress are his so of course he is going to claim that anyone who supports Kyl/Cornyn are actually supporting him. (Of course he does his best to kill any other bill that doesn't have his name on it so he can keep the issue alive and any solution dead.)

The Tancredo worshipers on FR seem to think that anyone who doesn't bow down and kiss his feet support "open borders". They are either unwilling or unable to see that just because someone thinks Tancredo is an ass doesn't mean they don't think we need effective border controls. There are far better people who could be the messengers for the issue than Tancredo who most Americans see as a loose canon that would like to commit nuclear genocide and someone with ties to the anti-Semite Pat Buchanan.

And of course the comments his worshipers make like he should be installed for life as President and that the only solution to the "Mexican problem" is a "bloody genocidal war" not to mention the daily calls for "machine guns", "mine fields", "sniper teams" and "hunting safaris" on the border don't help his image with the vast majority of Americans.

Ill ask you too. Which parts of Kyl/Cornyn can you live without? When it comes out of committee it will be short a few limbs. Figure out which ones were never intended to stay in and answer with those so you don't look bad when they are axed.

Kyl/Cornyn is about as similar to Tancredos bill as it is to McKennedy, that is, not very.

I fairness on this issue, Delay can kiss my ---.

Conservatives have been trying to get him to wake up for at least fifteen years on this issue.

Where do you folks come off trying to peddle this nonsense?

Comparing him to Richardson? Compare him to Tancredo and Buchanan. Those are the people who cleared the path for him.

I agree. 47% of Hispanic voters voted in favor of the anti-illegal alien measure Prop 200 in Arizona last year.

I wonder who is going to monitor corporations to ensure they are in "fact" making a valid attempt to offer these positions to qualified Americans before they recruit workers (who are willing to work for lower wages)from overseas to fill these jobs?

""We want a bill that doesn't even mention guest workers.
We want the current laws enforced strictly.
Rush is right..Pubs are going to loose the next election on immigration..cause I won't vote for them..they will loose a good piece of the conservative core vote""

are you aware that Tancredo favors a guest worker program?

Conservatives have come a long way.

In August 2001 conservatives on this form, usually from California, who complained about illegal immigration were generally ignored.

Today, only George Bush and the Republican Party's senior hierarchy are ignoring them.

Who? And if they're such "better people" why haven't they spoken up and done as we hired them to do. Defend the citizens of this country.
