The Case Against Intelligent Design. The Faith That Dare Not Speak Its Name.
The New Republic ^ | 8/11/05 | Jerry Coyne

Exactly eighty years after the Scopes "monkey trial" in Dayton, Tennessee, history is about to repeat itself. In a courtroom in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in late September, scientists and creationists will square off about whether and how high school students in Dover, Pennsylvania will learn about biological evolution. One would have assumed that these battles were over, but that is to underestimate the fury (and the ingenuity) of creationists scorned.

The Scopes trial of our day--Kitzmiller, et al v. Dover Area School District et al--began innocuously...

It's not faith in God that hurts conservatism. It's trying to have things taught in school that simply aren't true.

You missed the point (did we all miss the point?)...narby stated that the evidence of science would not lead to a conclusion that Jesus was Deity. I don't agree...I believe that the evidence would and does.

Let me be more explicit. You don't know. Neither do I. Nor does Osama. No one knows. People choose to believe. That is called faith. Not knowledge. It's unprovable (like ID)

People choose to believe what they need to believe to make life meaningful to them.

Problems come up when they try to impose their faith on others.

"My conservatism is shaped by my own experience, not by what was said two hundred years ago".

Holy cow!!!

No wonder our representative republic is in the shape it is...even those who claim to be "conservative" don't even know what it means anymore.

You formulate your positions like Ruth B. Ginsburg!

Or...Senator Kennedy, is that you?

The only thing we have as a representative republic is the 200 year old founding documents...that (along with the Sovereign Creator God) is conservatisms' reality.

BTW, people did not write the Bible...They were verbally inspired and the origin of what they wrote was completely separate from them (2 Peter 1:21).

If you really want to know God's mind, then read His Word.

In regard to the writers of Scripture accepting slaverey...citations please (but don't waste your time...there are none).

My Grandparents were from Nova Scotia.

The only way you can tell I have any Scotch in me is by my wallet.

After a few drinks I can't seem to pull it out of my pocket.

"I estimate that no matter how far along I get in this endeavor it will always take me longer than the current age of the universe to finish and I don't think I can find the time."

I'm sure that with a little creative scheduling you could swing it.

"In Revelations alone, the text is so wierd that you can read anything into it."

It would be interesting to count the number of times a specific prophesy has come true over the last couple of thousand years. I'm sure some of these prophesies have been fulfilled more than once.

I'm confused. Which side are you criticizing -- the "teach the controversy" Christians or the dogmatic materialists who run to court to suppress an opposing point of view?

"Anyone who looks to the text of Federal Reserve notes to bolster his faith is in deep spiritual trouble"

I'm not even American and I can see the desperation in that one.

Another scholar, I see. I suppose you are going to rationalize this by saying that slaves in Biblical times were happy, even better off than before they were slaves.

funny thing. I grew up in the South, and that's exactly what people said about black slaves.

From the Mayflower Compact throughout the Constitution, and beyond, Christianity has always been imposed in the United States. It is the foundation of our representative republic.

Significant evidence exists through history, archeology, fulfilled prophecy, manuscripts and etc. that prove the Truth and claims of the Bible.

Your faith that God, the Bible, and God's creation is not what Biblical Christianity claims them to be exceeds my opposing faith.

Problems come up when you, and others, try to impose that faith.

Provide me with direct knowledge that God does not exist; That He is not the Creator; And that He did not create everything by His spoken Word in the six literal days that He claims He did.

There is no controversy that can be taught in a science class.

I didn't know that. In which sense has it been imposed?

1. To establish or apply as compulsory; levy:

2. To apply or make prevail by or as if by authority:

3. To obtrude or force (oneself, for example) on another or others.

4. Printing To arrange (type or plates) on an imposing stone.

5. To offer or circulate fraudulently; pass off:

How would the universe be different if it sprang from the forehead of Zeus?

It would be more intelligently designed; Athena....

"Another scholar I see."

What?

Did you see your reflection in your monitor?

Can you provide a citation for your statement that the Bible's writers were accepting of slavery, or not?!

And which writer/writers (again, don't waste your time chasing this so-called archaeoraptor or piltdown man...it doesn't exist)?

I find it amusing when an evolutionist on this site debates in a manner that is consistent with the manner in which creationist are accused of debating.

Based on your posting...many of your evo friends would accuse you of being a liar. However, I will withold from making that judgement.
