One Hit Wonders (Voter Thread) |
Welcome To The Canteen Music Dedication!! In our continued effort to bring music themes that you want, we continue this week with our Canteen voted thread of One Hit Wonders! This list was compiled from various sources. Some of you may disagree with an artist showing up in our One Hit Wonders list, but that's okay. We're not here to state that we are the authority on such matters. We're here to enjoy some music from popular artist (although, not popular for long) of their respective music eras. There are many artists/songs that are considered One Hit Wonders. However, we don't have all day and night to list them. We've gotta sleep now and again! Hehehe! We enjoy feedback. If you have requests, please ping laurenmarlowe on the thread or via FReepmail. As always, we greatly appreciate the opportunity to entertain our Troops, Veterans, and their family members. Enjoy!

Here is a bit of a story on Bill Ray Cyrus.
Billy was from northern Kentucky. A former top Guitar player named Dean Porter lived near him. Dean had been the guitar player on the early Little Jimmy Dickens records. Dean had allowed Chet Adkins to stay at his home when Chet was trying to make it in Nashville. Most of the people in Nashville knew Dean quite well. He was very liked and respected.
Dean had a heart attack at age 35 (early 1950s) and retired for several years to his Kentucky farm. But then Chet got Dean the job of running the Gretch Guitar plant. Dean was a guitar crafsman as well as a great player.
After Dean retired from Gretch he just played a few local gigs in southern Ohio and northern Ky for fun. Dean heard Billy Ray on several occasions and introduced him to some people in Nashville.
The result was Achy Breaky Heart. The guy who wrote Achy Breaky Heart had given up on the song. It had been recorded three times before Billy Ray did it and it had never sold enough to pay for a session.
A good buddy of mine (a steel player) thows a picnic gig for wanna bees and never have beens each year. The year before Billy Ray made it he was playing with the rest of us. No one expected him to make it. But Dean thought he had a chance and Dean was right.
There have been many good talents come from Northern Ky and Southern ohio. Johny Paycheck, Connie Smith, Bobby Bare, Gary Adams, Darrel McCall, and Slim Rutter. Slim was the best singer of all... but never even got a recording contract. He passed away a few years ago. I played lead for Slim when I was just a kid. He was great but the majic never happened. Darell is a fantastic singer. He recorded for 3 major lablels and had top management but never made a hit. He is way to old to make it now.
Gary Adams is a fantastic singer.. but had one song get to number 20.. and that was it.
Connie, Johnny and Bobby all made it. Bobby and Connie made it quikly.. It took Johnny nine years in Nashville to get a hit.
It took Paycheck three names, Donnie Lytle, Donny Young, and Johnny Paycheck before he made a hit.
Paycheck did try to help other people get a start. He always introduced those of us from Southern Ohio as one of his relatives. As screwed up as Donny was, I never figured that was much help.. But Donny must have thought it was.
Someone once asked me If I was really related to Donny.. I replied, "Only by Divorce." The guy had likely heard "Only by marriage" but I don't think he had heard "Only by Divorce" before.

Hey Canteen Dee Jays, I see that you put my theme song up as a one hit wonder song. Wasn't there are a part 2 or sequel to the I am too sexy song? I seem to remember so.

Breakfast At Tiffany's
~ Deep Blue Something ~
Reaching the Top Five at the end of 1995 this well-crafted pop song was in contrast to the group's self-image. These guys from North Texas State considered themselves an alternative band with gothic elements and this early song was a departure. The quartet consisted of Todd Pipes (vocals/bass), his brother Toby (guitar/ vocals), Kirk Tatom (guitar), and John Kirtland (drums). They toured Texas after graduating the University of North Texas, then settled down and began "real life" since their musical career was in doubt.
When this song began to get radio play, Todd Pipes was eventually fired from his job as an English teacher at a private Christian school because parents complained that their children were being educated by a rock & roller. Disillusioned, they didn't get around to recording a follow-up until 2001, by which time their star had passed them by.

I hope so too, MoJo. I often wonder how much the soldiers get to be here. They are truly heroes!!!!!!
I also appreciate the huge sacrafices all of you "dependents" make for us, too! Sometimes holding down the fort is just as hard--in its own way--as takin' care of the bad guys. It's a good thing women are good at multi-tasking 'cause when Daddy's away, Mamma does ALL of the home stuff.
It takes two great partners to make a military family!
