One Hit Wonders
(Voter Thread)

Welcome To The Canteen Music Dedication!!
In our continued effort to bring music themes that you want, we continue this week with our Canteen voted thread of One Hit Wonders!

This list was compiled from various sources. Some of you may disagree with an artist showing up in our One Hit Wonders list, but that's okay. We're not here to state that we are the authority on such matters. We're here to enjoy some music from popular artist (although, not popular for long) of their respective music eras.

There are many artists/songs that are considered One Hit Wonders. However, we don't have all day and night to list them. We've gotta sleep now and again! Hehehe!

We enjoy feedback. If you have requests, please ping laurenmarlowe on the thread or via FReepmail.

As always, we greatly appreciate the opportunity to entertain our Troops, Veterans, and their family members.

Enjoy!

But It's Alright
~ J.J. Jackson ~

One of the most obscure figures of early '60s soul, J.J. Jackson scored a mammoth R&B hit in 1966 with this most infectious dance smash of the 60's decade. A native New Yorker that had worked as an arranger for Jack McDuff and Jimmy Witherspoon before his manager arranged for him to tour England in 1966, the mammoth, nearly 300-pound man who also played organ was a grainy, good-natured belter in the mold of Otis Redding and the English crowds loved him.

"But It's Alright," with its classic stuttering guitar riff and sharp horn charts sounded as authentic as any Stax/Volt single, but it was actually recorded in the U.K. with British session musicians. Jackson, a talented songwriter who penned much of his own material also wrote the notable A-side of one of "the Pretty Things'" best mid-'60s R&B/raunch singles ("Come See Me"). Jackson never matched the success of "But It's Alright," but cut some singles which are highly valued by English Northern soul connoisseurs. He later surfaced as a Los Angeles disc jockey, leading to a cameo appearance in the film Car Wash that has been sampled by numerous rappers. If you recognize this tune and you're not as old as dirt (as I am), it's likely you've heard the successful Huey Lewis cover version which also cracked the Billboard charts.

Another one I always liked that I think fits here is:

MORNING SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN
Tommy Edwards

There was a girl, there was a boy
If they had met they might have found a world of joy
But she lived on the morning side of the mountain
And he lived on the twilight side of the hill

They never met, they never kissed
And they will never know what happiness they missed
For she lived on the morning side of the mountain
And he lived on the twilight side of the hill

For love's a rose that never grows
Without the kiss of the morning dew
And every Jack must have a Jill
To know the thrill of a dream that comes true

And you and I are just like they
For all we know our love is just a kiss away
But you are on the morning side of the mountain
And I am on the twilight side of the hill

For love's a rose that never grows
Without the kiss of the morning dew
And every Jack must have a Jill
To know the thrill of a dream that comes true

And you and I are just like they
For all we know our love is just a kiss away
But you are on the morning side of the mountain
And I am on the twilight side of the hill

Don Williams is my all-time favorite singer. His voice is so mellow.

Thank you for the song!

Okay. Back from the laundry room. Nothing like wash and dry utility uniforms.

For one hit wonders, pretty much all of those are darn good tunes. there.

I'm surprised Thomas Dolby didn't go further than he did being the 80's and all.

" What About Me ". The group name always eludes me, but the the last words are..
" ...all the world's gone home. Nobodys been saved, and I'm feeling cold and alone. I guess I'm lucky, I've smiled a lot- but sometimes I wish for more than I've got...what about me?
It isn't fair, I don't have enough now I want my share, can't you see, I want to live, but you just take more than you give..."
Beautiful song.
