Iraq war boosted Islamic extremist threat- Carter

KINGS BAY, Georgia (Reuters) - The 2003 invasion of Iraq was a mistake that has boosted the ranks and morale of extremist Islamic groups and made them a greater threat to U.S. interests, former President Jimmy Carter said on Friday.

"We have not lessened the strength of terrorists around the world and have not lessened but have increased both the number and the fervor and the organizational capabilities of terrorists," Carter said in a news conference at this U.S. naval base in southeastern Georgia.

Carter, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and one of the fiercest U.S. critics of the war in Iraq, added that he was opposed to a sudden withdrawal of U.S. troops "because it would lead to a "debacle" in the Middle Eastern nation.

Carter's comments came one day after President George W. Bush rejected calls for a quick pullout. Bush, who is vacationing at his ranch in Texas, said a premature withdrawal would betray the Iraqis just as they are being trained to defend themselves and eventually take over from U.S. soldiers.

More than 1,800 U.S. soldiers have been killed since a U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq in the spring of 2003, toppling Saddam Hussein from power.

Carter was in Kings Bay, Georgia, to tour the U.S.S. Jimmy Carter, a newly commissioned nuclear submarine. Carter, a former Navy submarine officer, and his wife, Rosalynn, spent Thursday night on the submerged vessel.

This is one submarine I wouldnt want to serve on, Who wants to serve on a boat named after this idiot. Realise this Jimmy Peanut ,it isnt the Iraqui war that has helped the morale of the terrorists , it is people like you who have tried their damndest to encourage them and aided and abetted their travesties by condemning your own country.

Let me rework that a little.

The 2003 invasion of Iraq 1978 abandonment of the Shah was a mistake that has boosted the ranks and morale of extremist Islamic groups and made them a greater threat to U.S. interests, former President Jimmy Carter said on Friday.

There. Now it is accurate.

Oh and SHUT THE HELL UP YOU AMORAL DICTATOR LOVER!

It's old tools like Jimmy Carter spouting this anti-American crap that gives the terrorist a morale boost.

God save of us from such fools!

Be Ever Vigilant!

Jimmy Carter is a very small, embittered little man who inflicted more damage on the US (and the world) in 4 long years than any President in history. God may forgive him but I won't!

Jimmy you are a puke!

The gall..and this at a Naval base no less. Great job as always keeping up troop morale, Jimmy!

I feel sorry for the submariners that are stationed on that sub. I feel they should take it out past the 3 mile limit and scuttle the ship. It still couldn't sink as low as it's namesake has done. What a disgrace.

This from the good ol' boy who BROUGHT us Islamist terrorism as we know it today. Come to think of it, the MORONS who voted him into office, giving us Iran, the Arab oil embargo and Yasser's Intifadas in the foreign front, along with double digit unemployment, inflation and interest rates on the domestic front are the SAME ones (mostly) that are protesting the war on terror today.

There's a pattern here.

For you youngsters, the Revolution - the type that the Constitution calls for - very nearly happened on Carter's watch. It got mixed up with the hippy Revolution historically, but they were polar oppisites in concept and therefore quite seperate. The election of President Reagan and implimentation of his EEEEVEEEEEL trickle down economic plan prevented the one which would have really taken place.

Ah yes, this from a man who gave the Islamic Jihadists their 1st victory by letting them seize and hold American Diplomats, an act of war under International Law, for 444 days.

I lived in Georgia while he was Governor (preceded by a colorful fellow named Lester Maddox) and have been ashamed for him over last 14 years except for his work on building homes for homeless. His personal attention to this task is difficult to mock

From a CINC whose efforts to rescue the hostages in Iran ended in wreckage and dead men in the desert.

Just shameful.

I got out of bed this morning and breathed air. THAT increased the threat of Islamic terrorism. If all of us would just die the threat would go away.

Then let him stick to that and leave off the moralizing about something he is largely to blame for.

I would love it in Jimmuh confined his public comments to nail pounding and whatnot. But, he cannot help, I reckon, spewing all manner of bile against his country.

He is a disgrace.

Jimmah needs to take a long look in the mirror and examine his own responsibility in enabling terrorists.

The text of this article on the previous page stops here:Carter, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and one of the fiercest US

I had to out what the rest of the sentence was, cuz when I saw Carter being called the fiercest, I swore it was gonna say "rabbit fighter, since Elmer Fudd". Too bad the bunny didn't get him.
