Abortion Rights Group Withdraws Roberts Ad
By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago
After a week of protests by conservatives, an abortion rights group said Thursday night it is withdrawing a television advertisement linking Supreme Court nominee John Roberts to violent anti-abortion activists.
"We regret that many people have misconstrued our recent advertisement about Mr. Roberts' record," said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
"Unfortunately, the debate over that advertisement has become a distraction from the serious discussion we hoped to have with the American public," she said in a letter Thursday to Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa., who had urged the group to withdraw the ad.
Specter, himself an abortion-rights supporter as well as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee that will question Roberts next month, earlier Thursday had called the ad "blatantly untrue and unfair."
The NARAL ad criticizes Roberts and links him with violent anti-abortion protesters because of the anti-abortion briefs he worked on as a government lawyer.
"The NARAL advertisement is not helpful to the pro-choice cause which I support," Specter said in a letter to Keenan.
Keenan's response said the group will replace the ad with one that "examines Mr. Roberts' record on several points, including his advocacy for overturning Roe v. Wade, his statement questioning the right to privacy and his arguments against using a federal civil rights law to protect women and their doctors and nurses from those who use blockades and intimidation."

A pro-life legislator in Colorado used to call them
SNARL!
LOL
I saw a gentleman on CNN from www.factcheck.org today discussing this ad. He said they hardly ever brand something completely false-that it is usually twisting the truth or misleading, but that in this case, the ad is totally false.
Of course CNN has been airing the ad, so the reporterette looked kinda like she had poop in her mouth (IMHO).
From Factcheck.org website:
NARAL Falsely Accuses Supreme Court Nominee Roberts
Attack ad says he supported an abortion-clinic bomber and excused violence. In fact, Roberts called clinic bombers criminals who should be prosecuted fully.

That's What they All Say Roberts may have stated that he would uphold Roe v. Wade during his circuit court hearings in 2003, but he was simply stating what all circuit court nominees say because circuit court judges are required to uphold Supreme Court precedent. If Roberts is confimed to the Supreme Court he would be free to overturn Roe. Read what other anti-choice circuit court nominees have said about Roe during their hearings. Is he in favor of putting implants into the brains of all women that will make them incapable of choosing to abort?
Because choosing to do something illegal is still a choice....
Imagine how they'd react to being called anti-life. And that term more accurately fits them than anti-choice fits prolife activists.
ooOooH...! It was an "in yer face" just to get "public interface and dialoging" happening. I guess no one "got it".
"We regret..."
Say...is Daschle writing speaches now?
If so, I'm deeply troubled by the disturbing use of these types of ads, but in the long run I feel that we can find a common, bipartisan way to go forward with debating the Roberts nomination.
Oh bovine scat! These blasted Libs are getting their heads handed to them courtesy of their own self-inficted beheadings. Bout time folks became outraged with this pack of lying lowlife.

Well, with the little airtime you have left, Al: let 'er rip!!
The only regret they have is that they got caught in a lie.
"We regret that many people (freepers) saw through our thin veil of lies and put so much presure on us that we had no choice but to remove the add.

Hey NARAL... nobody "misconstrued" nothin'
They were in trouble with this one before they were blogged to death. Abortion rights supporters in the House and Senate -- both Democrats and Republicans -- were speaking out about the inappropriateness of the ad almost as soon as it started running. I'm utterly pro-choice, but that doesn't mean I'm in favor of knee-jerk attacks on accomplished and honorable citizens who respectfully disagree with me on that issue. I've haven't seen any evidence to suggest that Roberts would try to use a seat on the Supreme Court to ram his personal beliefs into law. And I suspect that on many important issues, he'd be a lot closer to my position than anyone NARAL would be likely to support.
NARAL's antics, along with the antics of that little fringe conservative group that's attacking him for doing pro-bono work for a gay organization, and the antics of the New York Times trying to dig up dirt about his adopted pre-schoolers, are just propelling him towards an easy confirmation. Makes politicians of all stripes nervous at the prospect of being associated with the nutty and rude anti-Roberts crowd.
Well NARAL does speak with forked tongues...!
NARAL's a hate group.

Yes, it should. Thank you for correcting my oversight.
Rather unusual compared to the sentiments of most Freepers...
Full Disclosure: Neither an invitation to nor a solicitation of and invitation to flame. Just noticing in passing.
Time to kick off the shoes, open a beer and say "ahhhhh".
NARAL and all the socialist left are brainless and foolish, and they can't find honesty and integrity anywhere in their vicinity.
Well, it is hard to find when you have NONE.
Talk about low. Actually lower than what they pulled on Bork, but the American public is a lot wiser and smarter due to new things like Fox News, Blogs and expanded radio shows...that were around back then.
"We regret that many people have misconstrued...." said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Taking responsibility never was one of their strong suits. In fact, playing on selfish demands to shirk it at the expense of others built their organization in the first place.
