Pennsylvanians rage about lawmakers' secretive pay raises

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Editorial writers and columnists have called it a mugging of state taxpayers, the Great Harrisburg Caper of 2005, an act of legislative thievery. ''Greed gone wild," one angry voter wrote.

Public outrage over a hefty pay raise Pennsylvania lawmakers voted themselves in the dead of night a month ago has nagged them throughout their summer vacation and shows no signs of going away.

Not only did legislators increase their salaries 16 percent to 34 percent -- reaching at least $81,050, more than in any state except California -- but they also crafted the package in secret without debate or public scrutiny, then left town.

Who do they think they are, the Mass. legislature? "HOW MANY MORE!"

I predict a run at the tax payer by the other states. Maybe State legislators need a national union to facilitate their greed!

Should carry them out nude. If one state could get its people together it would change government for years to come it they and judges knew the people would revolt.

29 lawmakers are backing a bill to repeal the hikes, says a Harrisburg paper. Caught with their hands in the cookie jar! Where do you think you are, Boston? :)

The snarks_when_bored proverbs of the day:

Those who establish their own compensation will always find reasons to increase it.

When it comes to money, a politician and its shame are soon parted.

This is infuriating as a Pennsylvanian! The sad thing is that probably less than 1/3 of the population even knows about this raping!

Its a website started by pissed off people to remove incumbents from office... and you know what, its starting to work. Last I heard, 8 or 9 legislators have declined their payraise after voting "yes". Keep it up!!

Best of luck! Story caught my interest because it sounded an awful lot like what has gone on over the years with the Mass. legislature here in the Bay State (late night pay hikes, and
skirting around clauses to make them effective right away).

I briefly stopped in Harrisburg last month (while on an Ohio/Penn. trip) and walked around the Capitol grounds, etc.; looks like the elected officials there were trying to pull
a fast one. What else is new!
