The "voluntary ban" should be implemented on the consumer's side

Correct, or by a restraunt that wanted to do so and perhaps advertise that fact, a health-food type joint. Hey, more power too them.

I'll have to spend some time in the archives; check to see what the anti-smoking nazis were saying then.

They told the smokers we were nuts to think any such thing, often with the argument that the government didn't have the right to dictate a restaurant's menu other than for sanitation reasons..........

He's trying for a legacy of "I made New York the healthiest city in America."

Actually, if this just stayed voluntary and an informational tool I would have nothing against it. Spreading information to encourage a good diet is a good thing. I think the apprehension most have, which I share, is that "voluntary" policies like this have a way of becoming mandatory prohibitions. We have seen the liberal playbook in action too many times not to be concerned. One of the curses of modern life is that one has to choose between being either cynical or naive.

Remember the little white card that Clinton held up when trying to sell HillaryCare? I got the idea that it could be scanned at the checkout register and any food that you had in line that was denied to you by the Directorate of Dietary Compliance would be confiscated. Second offense...you go hungry.

Why do we need a law?

You can choose to wear a helmet, a seat belt, open or patronize a non-smoking restaurant or tavern, etc.

Smokers, et. al. have tried that argument line.....and (to my surprise) a substantial number of posters here would not go along with that.

Now I am just waiting for the study which finds rap 'music' harmful....one ban I can really support.

I don't remember the card you're talking about (I was a rather self-absorbed teenager, lol) but it sounds an awful lot like the ones they have now for food stamp receipients.

I could see them trying doing that if Hitlery manages to get herself elected President. For our own good, of course. Not quite so extreme, of course, but close.

But, but, but, but, but they said they were going to stop at smokers.

This may not be too much of a problem as transfats are used primarily in prepackaged rather than fresh baked goods. I'm thinking they shouldn't appear at all on a restaurant menu unless they are serving Twinkies or something. More likely in convenience stores or short order places like Burger King, which use prepackaged bread.

I believe the primary purpose of transfats is their use as a vegetable fat which doesn't liquify at room temperature. Animal fats solve the problem and may be less dangerous than transfats.

What you say is probably all well and true..........but the question begs to be asked, when is enough enough with government intrusions in our lives? Where is it going to stop?

Yeah, I agree that the market should be the arbiter. Especially since the dangers of transfats are getting quite a bit of publicity these days.

"Where is it going to stop?"

Proabably at total government. Jefferson's quote about the natural order of things being for liberty to recede and government to grow seems to be right on the money. Maybe someone remembers exactly how that quote went?

I know the quote, but don't know it by memory. and I fear you may be very close to the truth.

Hope I'm not piling it on, but here you guys go.

The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases.BR>
Here's a site with a few more of Jefferson's gems.

This on popped off the page, one I haven't heard tossed around FR (then again I'm still new :) )

The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

It was only a matter of time. If you let them get their foot in the door, which we all did via smoking bans, they will try to control all aspects of private life.
