Spencer to Pirro: Let’s Discuss Your Liberal Record

BUFFALO, NY – Today, Republican and Conservative Party candidate for the U.S. Senate John Spencer sent congratulatory flowers to Jeanine Pirro at her official launch press conference.

The note to Pirro, whose stance on social conservative issues is similar to Hillary Clinton, says, “Jeanine, Congratulations on entering the U.S. Senate race. I look forward to discussing your liberal views. Sincerely, John Spencer.”

Mr. Spencer, a Vietnam Veteran, plans to run on the Republican and Conservative party tickets and will officially announce his campaign in early September.

Mayor John Spencer, 58, served as Mayor of the City of Yonkers from 1996 until 2004. Yonkers is the fourth largest city in New York and saw great prosperity, redevelopment and environmental cleanup under the leadership of Mayor Spencer.

For more information, or to schedule an interview with John Spencer, please call Christian Winthrop at (917)992-3517.

I have relatives ( who happen to be both registered Democrats and Republicans) living in Westchester County, most of them in the city of Yonkers. While they claim that Pirro has some weaknesses as a candidate, almost all think Spencer is not able to beat Senator Clinton.

Spencer seems to be the only conservative in the race. He has my support.

Two others on this thread told me I was right.

My point was this: probably two-thirds to three-quarters of the Republicans in NY gladly and willingly consider themselves "liberals." I agree, from a national party perspective, this is not good, but in NY, it's to be expected, and nominating a "liberal" in the form of Jeanine Pirro, who aside from her liberal-leaning positions, can probably kick Hillary in the teeth, hardly seems like a real negative.

He cut taxes, spending and decreased debt while crime dropped. The city is no longer under federal control.

Maybe he should be running for Governor.

I don't know much about Spencer. It could well be he's more conservative than Pirro, and if he wants to debate that, more power to him. I was objecting to the cheap publicity stunt of sending her flowers. Reminiscent of the stunt Bobby Riggs tried to pull on Billie Jean King. And of course we know how that turned out.

My sense is that this lady will connect well with New York voters.

I think so. In time, she will be realized as more-or-less a tough cookie who will go to the mat fighting for New York. Having another woman opposite Hillary! will neutralize her lockdown claim to womens' interests to some degree (especially since Pirro has been championing womens' causes for decades now).

Also, as it was mentioned yesterday on another thread, don't underestimate ethnic politics in New York. The Catholic and Italian blocs in NYC are fairly large in some areas, and they vote.

I can't say if she'd win or not at this stage, but at the very least I think she'd give Hillary! some good jousts.

The conventional wisdom among the pundits is that nobody is going to beat Hillary, but if Pirro can make it close, Hillary emerges from the race as damaged goods going into the '08 cycle. I don't expect Pirro to win, but it will be great seeing Hillary sliced and diced in this campaign. It will reveal all of the weaknesses that the Republicans can take advantage of in the '08 race.

The other thing: a Pirro/Hillary race may bring out that shrieking wild-eyed fanatical melt-down that we all believe Hillary is capable of, but which we have yet to see (because she is carefully handled and orchestrated in order to avoid a caustic melt-down in public). It's the potential for a melt-down under the withering attacks of someone like Pirro which may not lose her the Senate race, but may knock her out of the Presidential race.

Good luck in your future endeavors.

You sound like one of the places I used to work. You knew you were going to be fired when you got a "good luck in your future endeavors email". It got to be quite a joke around the office as one by one we received them!

When the GOP primary is over and the main candidate has emerged (probably Pirro), it's important for all of us to get behind that candidate. This is the last fight for Hillary! before the 2008 Iowa caucuses.

If she gets a free pass here, it's wide open for her White House run. There seems to be a spirited challenge for Pirro in the Republican primary, but when it's over, the losing candidates and their supporters better join together or Hillary! could breeze through this election cycle. In my eyes, that is the main objective--to make her take some lumps this time out so she is weakened in 2008. With any luck, Hillary! will have an interesting race by this time next year that will sap her presidential campaign.

Gotta go with the winner. In this case, the winner is Pirro. Would most of us prefer the more socially conservative candidate? Sure, but since that's not going to happen, I'll get behind the candidate who can beat the beast.

I agree. For the first time, The World's Smartest Woman™ would be forced to go toe-to-toe with another woman electorally (taking away her automatic I'm-a-woman-and-I-know-what's-best-for-us schtick). I know only some things about Pirro, and even less about Spencer, but I gather that she would not be a pushover. Pirro gets some fairly wide press in the NYC media market, since Westchester County is one of the main suburban counties, and she is usually praised for her aggressive stances on crime and punishment.

The reason I'd lean towards supporting Pirro in the primary right now is because I know that if Hillary! came back with some strong attacks, Pirro wouldn't curl up in a ball and die (which seems to be the modus operandi of the NY GOP).

What we (conservatives, Republicans, whatever) have to remember is that this is a Senate race in NEW YORK.

A New York "conservative" would be a flaming commie in Texas, right? Just like a Mississipi "liberal" would seem like Bob Dole wallking around in Boston.

It's a (very important) matter of perspective.

So, can Cox or Spencer beat Hillary in 2006? Absolutely not. They can run on "real" Republican platforms and get beaten 65%-35%, and everyone can feel real good about running a "true" conservative.

OR.....

We can support Pirro for what she is - a tax-cutter, tough-on-crime and terrorism prosecutor who for good or bad DOES HAVE the "R" by her name. Will she side with the 55 Republicans in the Senate on everything? NO. Will she side with them on more things than Hillary? YOU BET.

So, see this race for what it is: a way to make Hillary have to go on record about her intentions in 2006 and 2008. If she pledges a full term, she's a liar. If she doesn't, she plays right into Pirro's "doormat" statement.

Hey, wherever you live, the results of the 2006 NY Senate race will impact you in 2008. Send $10 to Pirro's campaign, be glad you don't live in New York, and hope for all the worst for Hildebeast.
