The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Was Bomber's "New York" Shirt A Message?
Full Story

It's hardly a unique fashion statement for a mass transit rider: a Yankees-style cap, and a "New York" sweat shirt.

But the New York Police Department is teaming with British authorities to determine whether those items were worn by suspects in the London terror cases to send a "purposeful message" to the city, according to an NYPD officials.

David Cohen, the NYPD's deputy commissioner of intelligence, raised the concern earlier this week at a security briefing for business leaders at police headquarters in Lower Manhattan.

I think that after digging around on this site, I have to issue a warning to not get on airplanes.

We do not need terrorists, we have enough fools, shipping all kinds of hazmat shipments, under false labels.

Then there is the repair work..........

All the quality assurance managers cited and the company execs in the know are all traitors in my eyes.

So stupid to cut corners for flying craft. And for our military no less? Traitors.

U.S missions say to close in Saudi over threat
http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=topNews&storyID=2005-08-07T155513Z_01_L07597513_RTRIDST_0_NEWS-SECURITY-SAUDI-USA-DC.XML

By Dominic Evans

RIYADH (Reuters) - U.S. diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia will be closed on Monday and Tuesday because of a threat against U.S. buildings, the U.S. embassy said on Sunday.

It said the embassy in Riyadh and the consulate in the Red Sea city of Jeddah would be closed on Aug. 8 and 9 "in response to a threat against U.S. government buildings in the kingdom."

The embassy advised U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase security awareness.

Last month, the United States warned Americans in Saudi Arabia that militants were planning fresh attacks in the world's biggest oil exporter, and later banned military personnel from traveling around the kingdom.

But it said it had no specific information about the timing, target or method of any possible attacks.

U.S. diplomatic missions in the kingdom have been closed briefly several times in recent years because of threats of violence against them.

An earlier statement, posted on the U.S. embassy Web site on Saturday, warned of "ongoing security concerns in the region, including for seaborne vessels traveling in the southern Red Sea."

Al Qaeda-linked militants have waged a bombing campaign in the kingdom since 2003 to expel Westerners from Islam's birthplace and destabilize the pro-Western royal family.

The violence has killed at least 91 foreign nationals and Saudi civilians, 41 security force members and 112 militants.

In 2003 suicide bombers hit several compounds housing foreigners, and last year gunmen made a series of attacks on Westerners, including a daylight raid on the U.S. consulate in Jeddah.

King Abdullah, who came to the throne this month after King Fahd died, is expected to continue the government crackdown on militants, which analysts say has already eroded al Qaeda's network in Saudi Arabia.

Authorities have killed or arrested all but three men on a list of 26 most wanted suspects published in 2003. In June officials issued a list of 36 more wanted men they are still hunting.

New CIA unit to dig into public materials
http://www.sciencedaily.com/upi/?feed=TopNews&article=UPI-1-20050807-11251900-bc-us-opensource.xml

WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- The CIA reportedly plans to expand a wing that currently translates foreign language broadcasts and documents to include a wide variety of data mining.

ime magazine says Director Porter Goss will launch the unit by Oct. 1.

The "open source" unit will search through public data such as research articles, Web sites and phone books in order to better investigate suspects.

What looks like a $100 million budget for the expanded unit will be monitored by the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte.

Critics of the CIA welcome the move, saying the agency has been too reliant on secret operation reports and failed to see the benefit of searching through open source items like the speeches of fundamentalists, Time said.

Al-Qaeda attack foiled
http://www.news24.com/News24/World/News/0,,2-10-1462_1750403,00.html

Tel Aviv - Turkish security forces prevented a mass attack the al-Qaeda terrorist group intended launching against Israeli tourists in the southern Turkish port of Alanya, the Israeli Yediot Aharanot daily reported on Sunday.

According to the Israeli daily, Turkish security forces arrested the members of an al-Qaeda cell, comprised mostly of Turkish citizens, in Alanya on Thursday.

They also found a boat docked in the harbour and loaded with 400kg of TNT, which was to have been used against the Israeli tourists.

Four Israeli cruise ships carrying 3 500 tourists to Alanya were ordered to change their routes Friday and anchor in alternate destinations following intelligence reports of a possible terror attack at the port.

Let's keep an eye on where TBTB are located. Anyone in a bunker at the moment? More than the usual number? Any unusual number of trips out of the country?

I agree we will NOT be told about an upcoming WMD attack and I believe they have a pretty good idea of when it is planned. Other countries gossip....

Clarification.

No, I have not heard that date mentioned; nor have I seen that date on any online calendar I have visited (that I can recall).

This was GREAT! I have a three year old newfoundland and a four MONTH old newfie to play Lil' Sis to the other and she is making us MISERABLE while the older pup snickers and sets the new arrival up for all sorts of misdeeds and consequences:
(No! Don't poop outside, they really want you to poop right in mommy's SHOES she wears for work. See ya gotta aim real careful like...trust me they'll LOVE it....)

It's gotten SO bad we've decided (and this is our THIRD newfie, but the first time we've had two at a time) to get a canine counselor our vet recommended to come to our home for private lessons for US and the pup. ~sigh~

Saw a satellite show about airline crashes. A point they made was that it is cheaper to settle with grieving relatives than to update the planes and make them safe. It was stomach turning and makes one want to take any other means of transportation than airlines to know they have no conscience about killing innocent passengers.

GM will be sourcing $1 billion in auto parts from India - enjoy your drive!

In my stack of old '78 albums are several with St. Bernard tooth marks through and through. Luckily (or maybe not) we got home before our Vanessa completed the chewing. We saved our Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and Rolling Stones albums..but Dionne Warwicke was not as fortunate.

Our very first newfie, NANA (as in the nurse from Peter Pan) who btw is a direct cousin to the Saint Bernard, chewed up some of my favorite holsters, but they were still usable. Everytime I use one of those now, I sorta shed a tear for her, since we lost her at the ripe old age of 12 in 2003. 12 is REALLY old for a newfie. Nana also had a fondness for my wife's Italian leather evening shoes....
