The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Was Bomber's "New York" Shirt A Message?
Full Story

It's hardly a unique fashion statement for a mass transit rider: a Yankees-style cap, and a "New York" sweat shirt.

But the New York Police Department is teaming with British authorities to determine whether those items were worn by suspects in the London terror cases to send a "purposeful message" to the city, according to an NYPD officials.

David Cohen, the NYPD's deputy commissioner of intelligence, raised the concern earlier this week at a security briefing for business leaders at police headquarters in Lower Manhattan.

MISCONCEPTION #1: Muslims are violent, terrorists and/or extremists.

This is the biggest misconception in Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRguerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians, these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist. etc.' linked with violence.

Politics in so called "Muslim countries" may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to God' and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'.

Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock.

NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS..

The Quran says: "Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors." (Quran 2:190) "If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things." (Quran 8:61) War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term 'jihad' literally means 'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad. The other 'jihad' is the inner struggle of the soul which everyone wages against egotistic desires for the sake of attaining inner peace.

Nessa was our best dog ever. She died (old age) the day before our youngest son was born. Those albums will never be thrown away. She will live on in our memories as long as we live. She also loved to chew on my husband's shoes (soft leather uppers).

Once your pup is trained, I'd venture to guess she'll be a lifetime keeper!

Try Eternity. Once we lose one to the Rainbow Bridge ~sniff~ we have them cremated for placement in our own caskets when the time comes. So far there will be three newfies and three kittys.

"Google urged to drop nuclear site images"
The Australian ^ | 8th August 2005 | Natasha Bita

Posted on 08/07/2005 2:35:28 PM PDT by naturalman1975

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "THE head of Australia's nuclear energy agency has called on the owners of an internet satellite program to censor images of the country's only nuclear reactor.

Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation executive director Ian Smith said he would ask internet search engine Google to remove the Lucas Heights reactor from its Google Earth program. The online program combines satellite images with aerial photographs and maps to let users zoom in on almost any building in the world.

While Google Earth "censors" the White House with blocks of colour over the roof and the nearby Treasury Department and Executive Office buildings, anyone with a computer and web connection can use the free program to see aerial shots of sensitive Australian sites such as the Lucas Heights reactor, the secret US spy base at Pine Gap, outside Alice Springs, and Parliament House in Canberra.

The satellite image of the Lucas Heights facility, on a 70ha site 40km southwest of Sydney's CBD, clearly shows the layout of the buildings and carpark.

"We're going to ask Google to take it off," Dr Smith told The Australian."

Hundreds of People Dead from "Swine Disease" in Sichuan?
Recombinomics + Others ^ | 6 Aug 05 | Recombinomics/Boxun News

Posted on 08/07/2005 2:20:54 PM PDT by datura

"Falsification of reports is definitely happening! Considering the geographical spread of the virus, how can there be only 38 deaths? (When I called home, my family members told me that there was a family which had a pig weighing more than 200kg. When it died, they had 4 workers to help the 3 of their own family deal with this dead pig. Before they could finish, a few of them fell to the floor consecutively. The time between onset of initial symptoms and death was approximately 20 minutes. How can they still say that this illness is curable?) Utter nonsense. How can they say that this epidemic is under control? What a lie."

"Exactly how many people are dead? Where are the 'Health people' (WHO? or local?) Officially there are only a few dozen deaths, but why are there natives saying that there are a few hundred instead? And controls are being placed on the movements of people now!"

The above comments from a Boxun story suggests the number dead in Sichuan is considerably higher than the official numbers of about 3 dozen. Several aspects of the official numbers are suspect. The above report describes several people falling ill at a single farm. The official reports have only about one person per location (80 cases in 75 villages), which is hard to maintain if there are many locations with multiple cases. The OIE report on stamping out for bacterial infections is also suspect. Streptococcus suis is widespread among pigs worldwide and control of bacteria usually does not involve stamping out. [The bacteria can be fought with mere soap and water.] The rapid spread of the illness also suggests a viral vector as opposed to a bacterial one (Chandu, Deyang, Luzhou, Mianyang, Nanchong, Neijing, Zigong, Ziyang are listed in OIE report). The limitation of media coverage also raises concerns that the bacterial component of the story is not the true etiological agent, which is also supported by restrictions placed on movement. [Sichuan is still basically under martial law.]

All of the above sounds like a viral component such as H5N1 bird flu and a recombinant Ebola is responsible for the high case fatality rate and rapid spread to humans.

Clearly an independent investigation by labs outside of China is warranted..

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Sun Aug 07 2005 15:29:31 GMT-0700.

SAUDI ARABIA

May 17, 2005

This Travel Warning updates recommended security precautions and reminds U.S. citizens of ongoing security concerns in Saudi Arabia. It supersedes the Travel Warning issued December 7, 2004.

Due to concerns about the possibility of additional terrorist activity directed against American citizens and interests, the Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens to defer non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia. The United States Mission in Saudi Arabia remains an unaccompanied post as a result of continued security concerns. Non-emergency employees and all dependents of the U.S. Embassy Riyadh and Consulates General Jeddah and Dhahran were ordered to leave the country on April 15, 2004. An armed attack on the U.S. Consulate General in Jeddah occurred on December 6, 2004, resulting in casualties among the non-American staff and damage to consulate facilities. Although counter-terrorism efforts have succeeded in diminishing terrorist capabilities in Saudi Arabia, terrorist groups continue to target housing compounds and other establishments where Westerners may be located. Saudi Government facilities are also targets. In addition to car bombs and armed assaults involving multiple gunmen against such facilities, terrorists have used ambush attacks to kidnap and/or assassinate individual Westerners.

American citizens who choose to visit or remain in Saudi Arabia despite this Travel Warning are strongly urged to avoid staying in hotels or housing compounds that do not apply stringent security measures including, but not limited to, the presence of an armed guard force, inspection of all vehicles, and a hardened security perimeter to prevent unauthorized vehicles from approaching the facility. American citizens are further advised to exercise caution and maintain good situational awareness when visiting commercial establishments frequented by Westerners or in primarily Western environments; keep a low profile, varying times and routes for all required travel; and ensure that travel documents and visas are valid. American citizens are also advised to exercise caution while driving, entering or exiting vehicles.

U.S. citizens who travel to or remain in Saudi Arabia despite this travel warning are strongly urged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh or the Consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, in order to be included in the Mission’s warden network. Updated travel and security information for Saudi Arabia is issued periodically via the warden network.

From time to time, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Saudi Arabia may restrict the travel of official Americans or suspend public services for security reasons. In those instances, the Embassy and Consulates will keep the local American citizen community apprised through the Warden System and make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. Warden messages can be found on the U.S. Embassy Riyadh website: http://riyadh.usembassy.gov.

Updated information on travel and security in Saudi Arabia may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 in the U.S. or Canada or on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. For additional information, consult the Department of State's Consular Information Sheet for Saudi Arabia, the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, and Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement at http://travel.state.gov.

"Turkey seizes five in 'bomb plot'"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Officers said 1.5kg (3.3lb) of plastic explosives and 20kg of chemicals used in the making of bombs had been seized from the house of one of the suspects.

Kurdish rebels have stepped up their campaign of attacks on civilian and army targets in the past few months.

The separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party, known as the PKK, has been fighting the government since 1984 in a campaign to create a Kurdish homeland in the south-east.

Soldiers killed

Police said in a statement they had arrested the five men - one a suspected PKK militant and the other four accused of helping him - in Mersin, a southern town popular with local tourists.

They were detained while "in the process of preparing for attacks on government buildings as well as facilities of touristic and economic significance", the statement said."
