NCAA deems Utah's "Utes" nickname to be "hostile or abusive"

Finding the University of Utah's ''Utes'' nickname, along with the nicknames of 17 other colleges, to be ''hostile or abusive,'' the NCAA today banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments.

The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday, but by preventing those teams from participating in its playoffs, it effectively is forcing the names to be abandoned nationwide.

The postseason ban begins Feb. 1, 2006. Said Harrison, the University of Hanford's president: ''As a national association, we believe that mascots, nicknames or images deemed hostile or abusive in terms of race, ethnicity or national origin should not be visible at the championship events that we control.''

In addition to the University of Utah, the list includes:

--Alcorn State University (Braves)
--Central Michigan University (Chippewas)
--Catawba College (Indians)
--Florida State University (Seminoles)
--Midwestern State University (Indians)
--University of Utah (Utes)
--Indiana University-Pennsylvania (Indians)
--Carthage College (Redmen)
--Bradley University (Braves)
--Arkansas State University (Indians)
--Chowan College (Braves)
--University of Illinois-Champaign (Illini)
--University of Louisiana-Monroe (Indians)
--McMurry University (Indians)
--Mississippi College (Choctaws)
--Newberry College (Indians)
--University of North Dakota (Fighting Sioux)
--Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Savages)

In November of 2004, the NCAA asked 33 schools were asked to submit self evaluations to the NCAA National Office to determine the extent, if any, of the use of Native American imagery or references on their campuses. Specific aspects of the self evaluations centered on three NCAA Constitution principles that reference cultural diversity and gender equity; the principle of sportsmanship and ethical conduct; and the principle of nondiscrimination.

''The NCAA objects to institutions using racial/ethnic/national origin references in their intercollegiate athletics programs,'' said NCAA President Myles Brand.

''Several institutions have made changes that adhere to the core values of the NCAA Constitution pertaining to cultural diversity, ethical sportsmanship and nondiscrimination,'' Brand said. ''We applaud that, and we will continue to monitor these institutions and others. All institutions are encouraged to promote these core values and take proactive steps at every NCAA event through institutional event management to enhance the integrity of intercollegiate athletics related to these issues.''

Schools will have an opportunity to appeal, the NCAA said.

I think "The Arkansas Power Mad Jerkoffs" has a nice ring to it. Maybe a bit too assertive.

Just remembered another one that's gona have to go "The United States Naval Academy Midshippersons".

Stanford used to be the "Indians" then they voluntarily renamed the team "Cardinal" as in the color.

They knew that no one would notice that "red" in the singular was a derivative of "red skin" or "red skins" or Indians...

Hopefully, the winged and feathered creature was not offended by the name change either?

***I went to Utah State. I'm sure we'll get sued for one reason or another.***

Ah, you are right, my fellow Aggie. I'm sure it won't take long until schools will be forced to stop using even animals as mascots for fear of lawsuits by the freaks of PETA.

Band?

Did you say band?

As in the Pachanga Band or Morongo Band or Palla Band or any of numerous "Bands" of "Indians" who run gaming resorts in California...

Absolutely. Wish I'd thought of that one m'self, mate!

Or, perhaps a disclaimer on every piece of paper from University of Arkansas, something like:

To Whom It May Concern:

The University of Arkansas wishes to clarify certain matters that may have come to the attention of our students, our alumni, and unfortunately also the press.

First, everyone should be assured that our University's adoption of our mascot, the razorback hog, has absolutely no reference to those individuals of such genetic ill luck that they must either shave or wax their respective backs every week or so.

Second, it would be both inappropriate and inaccurate for anyone to make any assumption that our adoption of the razorback hog as our University's mascot represents in any way the University's opinion about the relative appearance of the University's allegedly female graduate students, particularly those engaged in the fields of sociology and any other of our University's graduate-level disciplines ending in the word ''Studies''.

Third, while the University's mascot is indeed a species of pig, and thus when cooked properly (recipe follows) constitutes 'pork', I want to take this opportunity to assure our students, our faculty, our alumni, any PETA a$$holes in the vicinity, and every radical 'vegan' who might ever travel into our fair state, that the University never has, and NEVER will, seek its pork by slaughtering a razorback. We are well aware, and intend to remain so, wherefrom our pork originates. ''Whoo, pig, sooo-eee'', our various athletic teams' famous cheer, does not refer to any porcine creature or species, but rather to our supporters around our state, sometimes called taxpayers. It is entirely natural and normal that our University students embrace this cheer as heartily as they have done for many decades, and doubtless will do for many decades more. After all, only a very few of our University students are taxpayers.

Thank you for your kind attention today. Any member of our University staff will be pleased to answer any further questions you may have regarding our University mascot, between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. tonight, at the ground-breaking ceremony for our University's new Barbeque Hall.

I'd send it off with 2 exceptions; spell check "sooo-eeee" and the usage of "PETA a$$holes" may be redundant, as the name "PETA" already implies "a$$hole".

A good friend of mine has the notion, and he may very well be correct in his assessment, that the proper way to refer to PETA a$$holes (possible redundancy aside) is ''ignoble savages''.

The more I think on it, the more his terminology seems spot on.

Check ESPN tonight and you'll also find out that "Caribbean" is now considered a racial slur.

I find it very offensive that the NCAA is based in Indianapolis, Indiana! They must move at once!

My golly. The name "Oklahoma" is from Choctaw Indian words meaning "Red Man" or "Home of the Red Man". So we obviously can't use "University of Oklahoma" in tournaments. Absolutely not!

Oklahoma State is also going to have to change its name (not just its nickname). Besides the insult to the Red Man inherent in the words "Oklahoma State", their nickname is "Cowboys", obviously an insult to the hard ridin' tobacco chewin' riders of the range who always had B.O.

Oh, this political correctness searches high and low.

The "Banana Slugs" is hysterical! Oooohhh, I bet they're FAST too -- NOT!

Imagine how a player on those teams must feel to be a member of those feared "Banana Slugs." Talk about lowered expectations!

Fortunately, the NFL won't have this problem because the Washington Redskins will never make the playoffs again.
