DeLay: Round Up Illegal Immigrants

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay urged Texas police Thursday night to begin rounding up illegal immigrants, and said he backed legislation that would cut off federal funds to cities that don't enforce U.S. immigration laws.

Speaking to a gathering of Fort Bend County, Texas Republicans, DeLay said that if police rounded up illegals, the federal government would find places to house them.

Story Continues Below

In quotes picked up by the Houston Chronicle, the top Republican urged: "If you pick up 50 or 100 of them, you can call the National Guard." As for housing, DeLay said: "Put them in tents."

He noted that until now, even the federal government has not rounded up illegal immigrants in U.S. cities, because federal agents had no place to detain them. The situation is changing, however, under the new leadership at the Department of Homeland Security, he said.

DeLay emphasized that he's a strong supporter of legal immigration. But he opposes educating illegal immigrants using U.S. tax dollars or having their U.S.-born children automatically become American citizens.

According to the Chronicle, he blasted Houston city officials for their lax attitude toward illegal immigration, saying, "It greatly concerns me that the police chief in Houston, Texas, has created a sanctuary in Houston by announcing that he is not going to enforce our laws."

DeLay said he supported legislation introduced by Rep. Tom Tancredo that would withhold federal funding from cities like Houston that ignore federal immigration regulations.

Other big city governments, including New York City, that do not enforce immigration laws and would presumably also be at risk to have federal subsidies yanked under the provision supported by DeLay.

Good for DeLay. I've put him on my donation list.

Better be careful about that. See post #101. I agree, could be all smoke and mirrors to get thru until the next election.

Maybe better to send an email that says you totally support this and as soon as you actually see results, the money will come back.

I trusted Bush and the Republicans until Bush stood up and invited the whole of Mexico to come to this country to take jobs away from Americans - and the Republicans were too weaselly to challenge him on it. (A few did - but they have suffered from it) The grief I feel at that betrayal is overwhelming.

Trust in God and question all others.

Dubya' has shown this to be a most formidable trust and has been an admirable leader in doing so. (IMO)

Not me. I quit giving or donating to anyone until I see big changes. Not a penny until then.

Same here. I quit giving anything to any currently elected pol. I now give to first time wannabes who can articulate the message that I want to hear. If I end up giving anything to a current pol it too will be performance based and not before.

We're at a point in American politics where treasonous treaties and destructive ideas rule every aspect of American lives. There is no way out for us, as we are surrounded by corrupt politicians who don't care about America.

Perhaps, however the "free market" shows that we are doing well and if a change is demanded, then what is the change you require in your mindset?

After all, we are a "free society" and this is what has given us our prosperity that is so enticing to illegals.

So Bush trusts in God and destroys the United States by bring millions of illegals here to overrun our lives, our cities and our culture? He trusts God while millions of American citizens are living in hell because illegals have moved in and taken over their states and soon their entire country? He trusts in God but millions of elderly are losing their homes being forced to pay the high taxes needed to educate millions of children the illegals are having? Bush trusts in God but cares nothing for the elderly who have nothing but Social Security to live on and now Bush is going to put Mexicans on Social Security, bankrupting the system?

Bush may trust God but I doubt that after what he has done to this country God trusts Bush very much.

You got me on that one.

I long for the day's back in the nineties when I could freely convey my mindset via the Internet and not have the popping sound of the Internet bubble bursting while an aspirin factory is being decimated for pure political purposes in Sudan.

After all, we are ALL lost and suffering now aren't we? /s

Housing, employment, the market (free) are really taking a dive today because of the pure and unadulterated lack of focus of the present administration on "immigration issues"....

Don't just smell the roses my friend, look at them too and appreciate their vastly expanding growth via their roots.

Just a few years ago, I would have disagreed. But some of the events in the past several years have change my thoughts, and have made me very cynical towards most all those in D.C.

Immigration will be a dead issue long before the next elections.

LOL! In you dreams, I'm sure.

The problems with The Invading Hordes From the South may very well be the issue the election turns on.

The 'Let's Let the Invaders Overrun the Country' crowd has already recognized that they are losing on this issue.

Surely you know since you consider it to be a determinative number that will jolt a person awake.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I am still waitng for documentation of some numbers you made up.

I have the thread book marked.
