DeLay: Round Up Illegal Immigrants

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay urged Texas police Thursday night to begin rounding up illegal immigrants, and said he backed legislation that would cut off federal funds to cities that don't enforce U.S. immigration laws.

Speaking to a gathering of Fort Bend County, Texas Republicans, DeLay said that if police rounded up illegals, the federal government would find places to house them.

Story Continues Below

In quotes picked up by the Houston Chronicle, the top Republican urged: "If you pick up 50 or 100 of them, you can call the National Guard." As for housing, DeLay said: "Put them in tents."

He noted that until now, even the federal government has not rounded up illegal immigrants in U.S. cities, because federal agents had no place to detain them. The situation is changing, however, under the new leadership at the Department of Homeland Security, he said.

DeLay emphasized that he's a strong supporter of legal immigration. But he opposes educating illegal immigrants using U.S. tax dollars or having their U.S.-born children automatically become American citizens.

According to the Chronicle, he blasted Houston city officials for their lax attitude toward illegal immigration, saying, "It greatly concerns me that the police chief in Houston, Texas, has created a sanctuary in Houston by announcing that he is not going to enforce our laws."

DeLay said he supported legislation introduced by Rep. Tom Tancredo that would withhold federal funding from cities like Houston that ignore federal immigration regulations.

Other big city governments, including New York City, that do not enforce immigration laws and would presumably also be at risk to have federal subsidies yanked under the provision supported by DeLay.

I'd say it's about nigh unto impossible to be pro-Cafta and anti-illegal immigration...

Good to know I have acheived the impossible.

How do you figure? CAFTA will only work if we curb illegal immigration.

Hillary is pro illegal immigration.

Hillary being tough on illegals is a myth check out her voting record.

Hillary voted for permanent amnesty for all illegal farm workers in the ag bill.

Hillary voted against more border agents and against more detainee beds to be able to hold illegals.

Hillary is for in state tuition for illegals.

Hillary is for affirmative action for illegals.

Hillary is for U.S taxpayers paying for illegals to go to college.

Hillary is against the fence on the california border.

I keep hearing how tough Hillary is on illegal immigration when her voting record shows her to be an open border pro illegal immigration politician. I know Hillary's triangulation is confusing but look at what Hillary votes not what she says.

Immigration will be a dead issue long before the next elections

No doubt that's wishful thinking on your part but I'd say you are about 100% wrong on that prediction...

Bush may get his amnesty bill thru Congress but that will only light the fuse...

No way. MS-13 and OTMs will see to that.

Too bad the Mexican gov't isn't helping much to stop the flow.

It wouldn't surprise me if President Bush opposes DeLay.

REAL GUEST ACT (H.R. 3333)

http://tancredo.house.gov/pressers/071905Comprehensive%20Section-by-Section%20--%20final.htm

some healthy fines for those not hiring by the guidelines:

Doubles the civil penalties to which employers are subject for failure to meet the requirements above or for misrepresentation of a material fact in a labor condition application; the range of fines increases from $1,000-$35,000 per violation to $2,000-$70,000 per violation.

agencies allowed to interact:
State and local law enforcement agencies are assisting in the enforcement of immigration laws by detaining illegal aliens with whom they come into contact and ICE employees respond to every request for assistance from State and local law enforcement agencies;

As I understand it, Cafta requires open borders...I believe the wording has to do with 'the free flow of goods and people'...

Excuse me?

By 2008 most estimates say there will be another 7,000,000 illegal aliens in our country.

I'd say by then, there is going to be a whole lot MORE upset, angry American's.

I am aware of everything you posted, my post was meant to point out that Hillary talks out of both faces depending on who she is talking to. The voting record is something that she can't deny. She is a dyed in the wool socialist and the worst possible president we could have.

The Mexican government won't be happy until there are no more mexicans or indians left in Mexico.

It can't be a dead issue if 80% of left and right hold their feet to the fire.

Don't get me wrong, I loved DeLay back when he was a freshman congresscritter from my district, I have always liked him and he is the real deal, but I think the polls are showing this won't go away is the reason for this attention. In Tejas, going against the Mexicans is dangerous for your political health, no matter what district your in. If you are from the poor districts, this is your voter base. If you are from the rich districts, where will you get a maid and gardener if they are deported?

Rest at ease. No one with a brain believes she or any Democrat will do what needs to be done.

This isn't about her. This is about saving our country and securing our borders. It goes far beyond any party lines. Or should.

I'm not falling for it until I see him thwart the move for any kind of guest worker or amnesty program. it would be very easy to make some "lip service" comments about "rounding 'em up" that results in nothing, and then head fake and pass immigration legislation to make it worse. I am not pre-judging it yet mind you, but its something to watch out for.

I would say after saying this, he will have a hard time not opposing it.
