Cannon declines debate with Colorado rival (Tancredo)

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, known for his outspoken and sometimes outlandish views on immigration, will be in Utah later this month and agreed to debate his political rival, Rep. Chris Cannon.

Cannon says he has more pressing engagements - working on the irrigation system at his home.

Tancredo, a Colorado Republican and leading spokesman of the anti-immigration movement, was invited to the state by the group Utahns For Immigration Reform and Enforcement, or UFIRE, a group that battered Cannon over his immigration stance during his 2004 re-election bid.

He agreed to spend Aug. 24 to 25 in the state, making appearances in St. George, Provo and Salt Lake City. On behalf of UFIRE, Bluffdale City Councilwoman Martha Speed invited Cannon to debate Tancredo at an event in Provo on Aug. 24, but Cannon said he will be indisposed.

"Congressman Cannon plans to spend the 24th at home working on his irrigation system,” said his chief of staff, Joe Hunter. “However, given Mr. Tancredo's recent interest in religious sites, we would suggest our visitor from Colorado might want to occupy his time touring [LDS] Temple Square."

The reference to Tancredo's “interest in religious sites” is a dig at recent comments he made in a radio interview that, if Muslim terrorists mount a nuclear strike in the United States, that the United States should retaliate by bombing Muslim holy sites, including Mecca.

“What are we dealing with here, an arrogant jokester?” asked UFIRE chairman Russell Sias.

“Do we disagree with Representative Cannon's stand? Absolutely. But we don't have to set him up. The issues themselves will do that. When you're wrong, you're wrong.”

Cannon's spokesman, Charles Isom, said, “Congressman Cannon is going to engage in this debate on the floor of Congress and he doesn't really see this as a productive way to advance this debate.”

Recently, Tancredo has been visiting presidential primary states trying to force Republican candidates to take a hard-line stance on immigration and, if none does, has not ruled out running himself.

He and Cannon have a rocky past, due to Cannon's support for President Bush's immigration policies, and sponsorship of legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to earn citizenship working in the agricultural industry.

but it's an unusual and risky road he's going down.

No doubt. He's already been thrown out of the White House and warned 'to never darken this door again', over the issue of immigration. Talk about risky.

Obviously the whole party shouldn't be so irreverant, but it is a good thing that one or two are brave enough. Tancredo is way ahead of the rest of the Republicans on the subject of immigration, and has been ahead of them for years.

The question isn't if we change our policy in regard to the Invading Hordes, the question is which party is going to be first to get behind the change. Tancredo, in interviews on local radio has stongly indicated more than once he thinks it should be the Republican Party. I believe all his actions have that idea as at least part of his motive.

He sounds far more reasonable in person than he does in print. Maybe that's because of selective reporting by the media, I dunno.

But I don't think challenging fellow Republicans to a debate is a productive thing for the party or for his future. The bull in the the china shop might just get shot by the shopkeeper.

I don't think he really cares about his political future. It will be what it will be.

He does care about the issue of borders. I believe that he is pursuing the course that he believes will reach the goal of secure boarders as quickly as possible.

He may be wrong about the course to follow, but I don't doubt his sincerity.

Some are accusing him of doing all this just to run for president. I believe he will run. However, I, as well as Tancredo, don't think he has any chance. Yesterday I read a quote supposedly from him.......something to the effect of 'I'm too short, too fat, to be President'.

I'm quite sure that if there had been an internet in 1940, there would have been "*Norwegians*" (wink) posting that all good Norwegians should welcome their new German friends.

I'm also quite sure that there would have been "*Filippinos*" (wink wink) posting that all good Filipinos should want to join Japan's Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.

I would never have wasted my time debating them.

The fact is, illegals remodeled Tancredo's home. If Tancredo didn't want illegals on the job all he has to do is tell the contractor. He didn't because he didn't care/because he didn't think he would get caught.

LOL! You are so full of BS. Maybe you should get some help for your obsessive dislike of Tancredo. When you have to lie to try to make Tancredo look bad, then you know you have a personal problem.

Why bother debating with Quislings and false-flag freepers? They don't believe one word of the transparent lies they write, they are simply propagandists with the goal of wrecking our Republic.

I agree. But sometimes I just can't resist tweaking their noses a little bit just for the hell of it.

If nothing else, they do serve to keep the threads active and bumped to the top. Every reply equals about 15 lurkers reading the article.

You may try to spin it as "my lies", but these are facts documented in the media.

You may not like it, but Tanc is a political outcast. This is proven by the fact that, even though he has the longevity in Congress, he has no stature there. He occupies no committee chair. His committee assignments are the lowliest of the low.

Look also at his position within the Colorado delegation. Salazar's recent press release proves that Tanc was lying when he said Salazar supported him. It is not insignificant that Salazar would go out of his way to shoot Tancredo down.

For full disclosure, the guy you're arguing with is a globalism extremist. Any outrage over Tancredo's contractor hiring illegals is completely feigned.

Shhhh; they think they're fooling the casual reader into believing their view is the mainstream. By them I mean this Ben (Doing Something Unwholsome), Coercer, Danged and similar creatures who lie and obfuscate on these threads as if they were paid to do so.

Hmmm...

The following is an article that appeared in the Rocky Mountain News:

Drywall installer angrily challenges illegal-alien claim

By Heather Draper And M.E. Sprengelmeyer, Rocky Mountain News

September 20, 2002

A Denver businessman accused of using illegal workers to remodel U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo's basement said Thursday he would welcome a visit from immigration officials.

J.J. Fukunaga, who has owned and operated Creative Drywall Designs of Denver for 19 years, said he was blindsided by the accusations and frustrated that he didn't know who was making them.

The Denver Post, citing unnamed sources, reported Thursday that illegal immigrants were used to finish Tancredo's basement and install a home theater system - charges that Fukunaga angrily denied.

The newspaper interviewed two workers who said they took part in the job.

"I can't believe the story came out without anybody doing their homework," Fukunaga said.

He said he has documentation on all his employees and has been meeting with his lawyer to determine what he should do next. He said he would happily allow U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service agents to go over the paperwork.

Fukunaga and several members of his family also run Denver Audio Design, which worked on Tancredo's home theater system, installed during the basement remodeling. Denver Audio currently only has one employee on its payroll, store manager Brett Olkowski, who said he was born in Buffalo, N.Y.

Olkowski said he and two other men worked on Tancredo's audio system - Jeff Wolff, who was born in Denver, and Brad Brock-Purviance, who was born in San Diego.

"We're all definitely legal citizens," Olkowski said.

Tancredo's offices in Denver and Washington were flooded with calls, mostly in his support, his staff said.

Tancredo, a Republican from Littleton representing Colorado's 6th Congressional District, said he had no evidence that the companies involved in his renovation project did anything wrong, so he planned to take no action.

"I have nothing to tell the INS about these two alleged illegal aliens who are felons," Tancredo said.

"I don't know who they are and I don't even know if they are real people.

"I have no information to lead me to believe the company has done anything wrong. I don't even know, frankly, that those people really are here illegally. They could be people who didn't even work in my basement, but they despise me."

There are two ways that you can tell that Fukunaga's story is bull.

First, the newspsper didn't retract the story.

Second, Fukunaga didn't sue the paper.

You can easily tell the real Quislings and false-flag freepers around here.
They scream at the mention of Tancredo's name like the devil being doused in Holy Water.

You stated in a post to judgeandjury that the sub-contractor "admitted the illegals were there." When and where did the sub-contractor admit "the illegals were there."

Did the sub-contractor ever admit "the illegal were there" as you told judgeandjury in one of your posts? Did you simply create a lie?

The Denver Post never listed any illegal alien that allegedly worked at Cong. Tancredo's house. The article that I posted contained the names of three Americans (Brett Olkowski, Jeff Wolff and Brad Brock) who worked on Cong. Tancredo's home. Please provide the name of a single illegal alien that worked on Cong. Tancredo's home.
