The Washington Post Co. reported a 7.2 percent decline in earnings for its latest quarter, despite higher revenue at its education, newspaper, magazine and cable divisions.
The publishing company had second-quarter net income of $78.8 million, compared with $84.9 million for the same quarter a year ago. Revenue rose 10 percent to $897.6 million.
Operating-income declines at the company's newspaper and broadcasting units offset gains elsewhere.
Higher newsprint and pension costs drove newspaper profits down 28 percent. The newspaper division generated $234 million in revenue, up 1 percent from a year ago. Print advertising revenue fell 2 percent.
The Post's circulation continues to decline. Daily circulation is down 4 percent through the first six months of the year to 692,200, and Sunday circulation is down 3.5 percent to 985,100.
The Post's (NYSE: WPO) Kaplan education division continues to generate strong returns, with total revenue of $345.8 million, a 25 percent gain over year ago results.
Great news for the comPost.
These days, I really enjoy all the opportunities I have to smirk. And the pursuit of happiness marches on.
The Wash post and L.A. Times etc are taking it in the groin.
Maybe they should think about always kicking the conservative dog.
Hey WashPost ~ rumors and lies don't cut it any more!
It's about integrity and living as your word (telling the truth) ~ two things that you don't have clue about!
I'm just happy that Mr. Bean Dog finally agreed to cancel it the other day. It wasn't for the reason I'd liked it to be but at least it doesn't darken our doorstep anymore.
Asleep at the switch here: "Capitol" -- not "Capital"
Old age is a bit of a challenge sometimes. **S**
BWAAHAHAHAHA HAAA!!!
The Washington COMPOST losing money? How can it be with the demand for clear, honest reporting of the facts out there?
Didn't think so!
Will they ever recover...I doubt it.
"What do you think, Mr. Andrews?"
"She's going to sink, Captain Smith..."
And it is bound to get worse in the next few years with the influx of illegal aliens in the outlying Va. & MD. suburbs. Just observing the re-cyling pick-ups going past heavy hispanic areas I noticed that there were no (nada, zero, zip, zilch) newspapers being loaded. I pulled in for a morning coffee and noticed the recycling crew in the same lot. I asked the driver if what I thought I had observed was true. He said,"Yup, but the beer bottle gain still makes for a full load. So the subscriber base is going down the tubes and the advertising rates have to follow. But there be more drunken illegal illitrates to vote the dem party line.
I'm out of here ;>)
Speaking for myself and my circle of friends in the DC area, its getting harder and harder to justify a subscription to the post when you can get the whole thing online ( or any news source of your choice). The web version of the post is more up to day with news and sports, so whats the point of the paper unless you want the coupons or crossword?
thats 'date' and not 'day', brain thinks faster than fingers can type.
Poste De Washington
The Washington Post is far superior to the New York Times. Even my liberal senior citizen father says so. He dropped the weekly edition of the New York Times and kept the Washington Post weekly edition. I read his copy sometimes and am surprised at how well written it is. And with a fair balance of subject matter.
