'Lewd rubbing' shuts Paris statue

Anonymous writes "Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris has fenced off a famous tomb to prevent lewd acts being performed on a statue.

The effigy of 19th Century journalist known as Victor Noir has long been popular with women visitors.

This is partly due to his reputation as a romantic figure, and partly because of the effigy's design.

Officials concerned about damage to the icon's groin area have erected a fence around the grave, and a sign prohibiting indecent rubbing.

Noir - whose real name was Yvan Salman - was killed by Pierre Bonaparte, a great-nephew of the Emperor Napoleon, after bearing him a challenge to a duel.

According to the story, he was due to get married the day after he was killed.

The statue shows Noir in a frock coat and trousers lying flat on his back, with a distinct enlargement in the groin.

The effigy has been held as an aid to love or fertility.

It is said that a woman who kisses the lips of the prostrate statue and slips a flower into the upturned top hat will find a husband by the end of the year.

The new sign warns: "Any damage caused by graffiti or indecent rubbing will be prosecuted."

Which dem did a magazine bolster, well, did some photoshop work in that area? I forget? Gore or Kerry?

Gaaahhh... As someone already posted, it was Gore; that was bad enough, but merely imagining such an enhanced picture of Kerry makes my gorge rise.

If they ever remove the statue for cleaning or restoration, I can step in.

DARN the luck!

Take a walk down to Wall Steet and the charging bull statue. The testicles of the bull are brightly polished from all of the tourists who come to take their picture with the bull and "stroke" the bull.

Thank GOD I wasn't the only one who went there.

Of course, Paris Hilton is almost always associated with lewdness...

Like a stone statue is more Satisfying than an Honest, Kind & Caring Husband.

It's a lot easier to find a statue in France. Or let me put it another way...A statue is better than nothing to a french woman.

If you hang around limp french men long enough, a statue starts to look pretty darn good.

I see something like this for bubba. That way generations of democrats can 'kiss it' .

Concept already in the works...

Seems there is a Bill cult starting here also.
Appropriate location for his pic though…laundry room aka beer storage back room

Naval Academy kids are in on the statue rubbing thing too:

Annapolis, Maryland - Hyman Rickover's Nose - Statue Burnishing
Although the bust of Hyman Rickover sits just a few meters inside the lobby from the front door of the Nuclear Science building, a sign out side of the building clearly states "Authorized Personnel Only". The door is usually open during the day and while the lobby is usually empty, it is obvious there are plenty of security cameras around to catch the adventurous "nose-rubber". The urge to just run in and give ole Hyman's nose one little rub may be irresistable, but you might ask you self one question first, "Do I feel lucky?" Or just ask find one of the many very pleasant and courteous midshipmen to escort you inside so that you can satisfy your urge. I'm sure that they would be more than happy to oblige and to have a tale to tell their classmates about the strange tourists on campus. [Nosey Rubber, 08/26/2002]

Maybe they're just looking to rub up against a Frenchman who doesn't smell bad?

In Drexel University's Great Hall of the Main building there is a statue we all called "The Waterboy"; actually I think its name is the Alsatian Vintner. He's seated, drinking, with one foot stretched way out and barefoot. Here's a picture of the statue:

The Drexel website says:

"...The right toe of the Water Boy statue maintains its luster from the tradition of students who rub the toe for good luck in their exams."

I definitely remember rubbing that toe before exams.
