Men surrender after baboon slur
03/08/2005 22:37  - (SA)

Zinkie Sithole

Polokwane - Three men have been charged with calling a petrol attendant a baboon.

One of the three men, who is aged 34, and two others, aged 23, handed themselves over to the Polokwane police on Wednesday.

"They were brought in by their legal adviser. They're not in custody, but have been warned to appear in court on Friday," said Polokwane police spokesperson Lesiba Ramoshaba.

Petrol attendant Isaac Sebata has accused the men of calling him a baboon last week and slapping him during an argument.

"We don't know yet what led to the argument," said Ramoshaba.

The three men will appear on charges of crimen injuria and common assault in the Polokwane district court on Friday.

Provincial manager of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Limpopo, Jeffrey Nkuna, said such name-calling was a human rights infringement.

"Such an act is definitely a violation of one's dignity," he said.

Nkuna said the commission would follow the case.

"We cannot interfere with the criminal case but we will pursue the incident," said Nkuna.

I hadn't been aware that South Africa was such a hotbed of political correctness and hypersensitivity toward 'hate speech'.

It seems that the authorities are more concerned over someone being called a baboon than by being slapped.

Provincial manager of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Limpopo, Jeffrey Nkuna, said such name-calling was a human rights infringement.

"Such an act is definitely a violation of one's dignity," he said.

The last time I checked, ALL name calling was, by definition, a "violation of a person's dignity".  That's the entire purpose of name-calling.  We don't call the Lefties who hang out at Democratic Underground "DUmmies " because we are interested in bolstering and upholding their dignity....quite the contrary.

So, are we to understand that in South Africa, ANYTHING that tends to demean a person's dignity is now a matter for the courts?

.

Not quite.

In South Africa, ANYTHING that tends to demean a BLACK person's dignity is now a matter for the courts.

Understand how it works, now?

If this article is any sort of valid representation of the state of the 'culture' in South Africa, I would venture to guess that if you were to bring such a slur before the courts there that they would reply with "Well, you ARE a Honky Mofo and we're going to fine you for harassing this honorable Bloods gang member who referred to you that way".

This article does not move me toward wanting to spend my vacation time and dollars in South Africa.

Something that you might find amusing, or disheartening depending upon your mood.  Your post made me laugh and so I wanted to put together a witty comeback.  I was thinking along the lines of a few phrases coupled with a picture of the traditional cannibal scene....the black-skinned natives dancing around the giant cooking pot which contains the traditional white explorers wearing the traditional jungle pith helmets.  You'd think that an image like that, which is such a common and ancient theme, would be a terribly easy thing to find on the internet, wouldn't you?  Well, I used the Google Image Search for the keyword "Cannibals" and I went through ALL 24 PAGES OF HITS and there was not one single image of that sort.  There were only a couple of old drawn images, perhaps woodcuts, involving the giant cooking pot and all of the cannibals WERE WHITE!  I guess that the liberal Google management has 'purged' their system of such 'offensive' and 'stereotypical' imagery.

Be careful, if you register displeasure with 'hate speech' laws in South Africa, you may find yourself a guest of the South African government in a rather small and poorly-furnished room (which likely does not feature a DVD player) and you may have a very tough time getting your passport back.

Goebbels and Himmler would be proud....

Sure do. At some point in time they will be in the same state as their neighbor, Zimbabwe. It will just take time to get there. From what I understand the brain drain is well underway as whites are moving out.

There was a time when the very idea of criminal penalties for calling someone a baboon was laughably absurd. That was before the laughably absurd ideas of the Left began to be taken seriously.

If this were the extent of the absurdity of the Left, it would be good for a laugh and nothing more, but, unfortunately, it's just the tip of the iceberg.

Leftist morons are actually influencing national and international policies. Millions of people actually pay serious attention to their laughable absurdities.

The real wonder is that the world's not in worse shape than it is.

If negatively impacting someone's dignity is a crime, the author's parents are screwed. With a name like "Zinkie Sithole" he/she should have his/her day in court.

There was an incident, I recall reading near the beginning years of the UN, concerning a diplomat from some newly formed "nation" located on The Dark Continent.

It seems that there was a government change at home and this poor fellow was recalled.....and they did, according to the article, eat him on his return. I don't remember if it was a joke or reality but either way it was an interesting read.

Holy ApeSlur, Batman!
It's Banana-fana Name Game time.

Making matters worse is that this will probably be tried in a kangaroo court, unless the petrol attendant oils the palms of the bag man. Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue was probably written just to lionize such misguided monkeyshines.

And speaking of names, "Polokwane police spokesperson Lesiba Ramoshaba" may not have been called a baboon but other nicknames may have been screeched at her on the playground.

Now leroy more than trouble
You see he stand ’bout six foot four
All the downtown ladies call him 'Treetop Lover'
All the mens just call him Sir

And it’s bad, bad leroy brown
The baddest man in the whole damn town
Badder than old king kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

I've always thought that Rush Limbaugh's statement that 'words mean things' would be used against him eventually. Evidently, it's just South Africa doing it first. Let's not go ape over this, though. I'm sure they'll feel sheepish after the world press picks up the questioning.

Hmmm, kangaroos courting each other? I just got this mental image of wildlife...

..Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore.
"Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou," I said, "art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the Nightly shore-
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!"
Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."

--Edgar Allan Poe
