Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms

GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.

The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.

The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.

The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.

He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.

After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

There's a reason why we don't domestic Mountain Lions and Grizzly Bears.

...and we try to "domestic" FReepers. ;-)

You said"She had a hose. That could have been used as a weapon against the vicious canine." It is very evident you have never seen a dog in attack mode, when they are that way they feel no pain and will not stop their attack unless killed or they kill their victim. When any animal, even humans, go on the attack, adrenilin sets in and nothing will phase them except disabeling injuries. I know that one day my Jack Russel Terrorist will die going down fighting.

I think with some dogs you have to be extra clear who the alpha dog is...

My mom had a poodle...a miniature poodle but a pretty good size one...on the big side of miniature. She was sitting between my mom and my son who was three at the time. My son leaned over and put his cheek on the poodle's back. Didn't lay on the poodle, just gently laid his check over on her back.

That poodle growled at my son and showed her teeth.

My mom pushed my son away and pulled the poodle up to her face and said (in baby-talk) "Don't you growl! Don't you act like that!" then just covered it in kisses.

You know that both me and that poodle learned real quick where the poodle was in the pecking order. I never really trusted it again.

(I shoulda figured it out years before when I was on my way to my wedding shower and the dog jumped up on my brand new nylons...I told the dog to get down and my mom shrieked at me that if I couldn't get along with her dog I could just get out of her house.)

Rottweilers have a known trait that make them snap without and reason or rhyme

Really, how about a little something to back that up with, hmm? Link?

I wish folks wouldn't assume that an aggressive dog was made that way by people. We once had English Mastiffs. I loved those dogs, and they were gentle giants until they had puppies. Then they were aggressive and frightening.

We had never hit or abused them in any way. We spent a great deal of time and money having them (and us) trained for obedience. Once they became aggressive, we had them put down, because they became a mauling waiting to happen.

Dogs are capable of jealousy. If my husband hugs me in front of our current dog, a Belgian Malinois, she tries to wriggle in between us. My guess is that the dog in the story saw the child getting affection and got rid of the competition.

Funny that my friend has had 3 and never had one incident with any of them.

LOL. Maybe the dogs don't KNOW they have a trait?

Do the research, look at the statistics. You'll see that as killers, those two breeds are much more prevalent. The numbers speak.

In other words, back up you words with facts.

Dogs like children are only as good as their owner.
Show me a bad dog and I'll show you an abused dog and a bad owner.

And all you "exterminate all the Rotties & Pit Bulls" crowd, if there were no Rotties or Pit Bulls the gang-bangers, drug pushers and other sordid lowlifes would just find another breed to make vicious!

I have had all breeds from Cocker Spaniels to Malamute to Rottweiler and the training made them all as nice a dog as you would ever want to meet.
Point, Game, Set, Match!

Inbreeding of these dogs can also make them more vicious, more difficult to train, and harder to handle. Breeders and veterinarians will tell you there is a world of difference in how the dogs are breed. Rottweiller can fetch alot of money from buyers, and there are many breeders that have no regard for proper breeding.

Rottweilers are one of the most intelligent and lovable breeds. However, they all need obedience training and should never be owned by those unwilling to commit a lot of time to the dog.

So domesticating a Rottweiler is an uphill struggle.

How many "sweet as could be" people snap for no apparent reason?

This is a great breed. My puppy is my second, and the first never hurt a thing in her entire life.

Blanket statements like your original are frightening.

They are land sharks, it's foolish to have a shark in your backyard swimming pool, so why would anyone want to have a land shark in their living spaces? You cannot protect people from their own stupidity.

So true...

I've told my next door neighbor that if their black lab scares my kids AGAIN, I will kill it. They brought the thing over to our house, on a chain, in an effort to make peace and right in front of all of us, in a very calm situation, the F*ing thing tried to bite my 4 year old.

This is not a dog that should be let loose. Frankly, its not a dog that should be allowed in a neighborhood. They had to put their previous dog down because it was too mean. Any dog can be mean. Little can be done once they are. In this case it is the owners that are to blame, but it will be the dog that pays for it.

Oh, come on.  Who amongst us hasn't at one time or another been seized with the almost uncontrolable urge to charge a young mother, rip an infant from her arms, drag it to a nice, quite spot, and maul it to death?  The dog just gave in to the impulse we're all born with.

Sure I let my doggie run, he's a good dog and has never bit anyone. He's a good doggie.. 90% of dog owners are scum of the earth. (If you're in the 10% then thanks.)
