Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms
GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.
The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.
The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.
The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.
The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.
The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.
He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.
After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.
When my daughter was 3 years-old, my wife and I took her for a walk in the neighborhood. As we were strolling through our townhouse village, she suddenly shot like a cannonball to a huge Rottweiler being walked by a neighbor. I was panicked, and ran after her.
She reached the dog before I did, and playfully began beating him on the head saying "Puppy! Puppy!"
The Rott's reaction was to blink hard every time she busted him on the head. He stoically took his pounding until I picked her up and carried her away.

Breeds have traits but there are always individual differences.
Owner may put up with a crazy Yorki but if it is 150 lbs, crazy is not allowable.
Rottweilers, Dobermann Pinschers, German Shepherds, etc. make fine dogs. But they need someone who KNOWS how to train and handle a breed which was developed for attack and guard work.
Unfortunately, too many people who purchase dogs haven't the slightest idea how to train or handle them.
When the dog involved is a setter, sheltie or poodle, you have a nuisance. When its a Rottweiler, etc. you have a tragedy.
Also, the individuals who breed these dogs bear some share of responsibility - not always and probably not in most cases. But when a breed becomes overpopular like the Rottweiler is now, there are individuals who get involved in breeding them for the buck and don't really care about the nature of the creatures they are producing.
