Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms

GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.

The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.

The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.

The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.

He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.

After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

"I have seen cognitively-challenged owners laugh when their dog starts harassing someone. There is a sadistic impulse in at least SOME of the owners..."

No doubt. We have some in our neighborhood who own mastiffs, rotts, pit bull. A LOT of dog owners let their dogs run around without a leash in residential neighborhoods.

I have friends who raised Rotts. I used to visit. These people babied the Rotts and were the kindest people on earth. One of the Rotts cornerned me, growling very menacingly, until I was standing on a picnic table. The owner had to drag him away.

He was a mean tempered animal. Had NOTHING to do with being mistreated.

I'm not arguing. Folks can keep lions with the right permits, and that's fine with me. But if they get loose and kill someone, the lion keepers should go to jail.

Ditto any powerful 150# fanged beastie.

To me, the potential courtroom scene would not be worth having a 150# fanged beastie with a....reputation. Just coldly looking at it from the jury's POV.

Is that lady with the Pressa Canarius in San Francisco still in jail?

Speaking of Shiatsus, I've recently acquired a two month old Yorkie and she shiats everywhere. I'm new at this and would be eternally grateful for any "potty training your puppy in a New York minute" tips. Thank you.

People are responsible for the actions of their dogs whether it is a poodle or a rottie. I have a friend who was attacked by a black lab 3 weeks ago. She had known this dog since it was a puppy. It bit her in the face she had 85 stitches and plastic surgery. She will be needing more surgery over the next few years. This story did not make the news but if it had been a pit or a rott it would have been the lead story

My point is a 10# vicious poodle is no big deal. You can swat it.

A 150# rottie is a VERY big deal, due to its inherent potential to cause bloody fatal mayhem.

Folks can argue about their "loveable 150# galoots" all day, but I see the courtroom downside.

So, let's just lop the entire breed into one "mean" category because of your experience. Let's not let your feeeeeelings get in the way.

You explained what happened much better in terms of wolf/dog psychology.

Many people are blind to danger in humans and in domesticated animals.

Training helps, consistent and decent treatment helps, good breeding and culling helps most, but DNA is DNA.

Most people are woefully ignorant or blinded by love about what dog DNA is all about.

" I have friends who've owned four Rotts. One was a certified therapy dog who visited children's hospitals and nursing homes..."

A relative of our owns 2 Rotts...one is also a certified therapy dog who does the same.

There is a large difference between facial stitches, no matter how sad, and dead.

I would bet you could find cases of dead also, they just don't make the news. We have rotts that we have certified as therapy dogs. They go into hospitals and nursing homes. it just shows it is not the breed it is the owners
