All that John Wayne warrior stuff stiff doesn't answer the question as to why they are asked to fight and die for Islamic Iraqis who still aren't quite sure whose side they're on.

I distinctly recall President Bush and Secretary Rumsfeld, among others, warning that this would take a long time and that they knew people would end up getting discouraged. It was said on many occasions.
I believe differently. So do several others on this thread. Is there something wrong with us, or are we just immune to media spin because we can see right through it?

THE TIMES: Mr President, last night you mentioned the link between Iraq and 9/11, but there's evidence of Iraq becoming a haven for jihadists, there's been a CIA report which says that Iraq is in danger of... are you at risk of creating kind of more of the problems that actually led directly to...?
PRESIDENT BUSH: No. Quite the contrary. Where you win the war on terror is go to the battlefield and you take them off. And that's what they've done. They've said, Look, let's go fight. If we don't win here, it's the beginning of the beginning. And that's how I view it.
We learnt first-hand the nature of the war on terror on September 11. And last time I went to Europe I said many in Europe viewed September 11 as a tragic moment, but a moment. I view September 11 as an attack as a result of a larger war that changed how I view the world and how many other Americans view the world. It was one of the moments in history that changed outlook. So as long as I'm sitting here in this Oval Office, I will never forget the lessons of September 11, and that is that we are in a global war against cold-blooded killers.
And you are seeing that now being played out in Iraq, and we're going to win in Iraq and we're going to win because, one, we're going to find (Osama bin Laden) and bring him to justice, and two, we're going to train Iraqis so they can do the fighting. Iraqis don't want foreign fighters in their country, stopping the progress toward freedom. And the notion that people want to be free was validated by the over eight million people who voted.
Frankly, I rejected the intellectual elitism of some around the world who say, "Well, maybe certain people can't be free". I don't believe that. Of course I was labelled a, you know, blatant idealist.
But I am. Because I do believe people want to be free, regardless of their religion or where they are from. I do believe women should be empowered in the Middle East. I don't believe we ought to accept forms of government that ultimately create a hopelessness that then can be translated into jihadist violence. And I believe strongly that the ultimate way you defeat an ideology is with a better ideology. And history has proven that. Anyway, you got me going. Starting to give the whole speech again.

I THINK the Bush administration would have reacted to the earlier attacks the same way they did after the 9/11 attack-- with a real response to these terrorist fleas. He didn't use a poll to figure out what he needed to do, he stood up in front of congress, us and the whole world, and declared that "whether we bring justice to our enemies, or bring our enemies to justice, justice will be done".
I'm not trying to defend Clintons inaction but let's be honest here. OBL wasn't on Bush's radar screen either until after 911. Not to mention Bush still being buddy-buddy, walking hand in hand with the Saudis who openly support terrorists. Hell they even have telethons for terrorists in Saudi. The US looks hypocritical to the rest of the world when our president makes statements like, "You're either with us or against us" then invites Saudi royalty to Crawford.
I have to agree with the other poster - I am conservative and have also opposed this war from the beginning. Say what you want about the American left, but I have seen no one from either side of the fence "dance with glee" or whatever when Americans die in Iraq. If they really somehow relished the idea of Americans dying, I think they would have supported - not opposed - the war.

Someone on the inside planned this I was told. I hope they figure out who it was.
I am doing just that. I am mourning the sacrifice of their lives for ANOTHER country rather than OUR country. What glory and honor is there in being killed by roadside bombs? All the hard work and training our fine men underwent is for naught if they aren't allowed to truly and effectively fight the enemy.
Until we stop fighting like Vietnam we will not stop getting results like Vietnam. Syria is a sanctuary, so is Iran. Why do we allow our enemies sanctuary? Go into Syria and take that government down. Same with Iran. Shock and Awe for them.
But instead we continue with bullet magnet patrols.

I experienced an IED close up last year. It was a controlled detonation and we were all stuck in "traffic" on Camp Victory waiting for them to do it before we could move.

I am so disgusted that these "people" are Americans that our brave Marines, soldiers, and sailors are putting their lives on the line to defend. These DUmmies are the same people--and their offspring--that spat on us upon our return from Asia decades ago. Thank G*d, Bush not LBJ, is our Commander in Chief.
