CINCINNATI -- A resume that includes military service in Iraq and harsh attacks on President George W. Bush wasn't enough to land Paul Hackett on Capitol Hill.
The Iraq war veteran narrowly lost a bid to win a special congressional election in Ohio.
Hackett was hoping to become the first veteran of the Iraq war elected to Congress.
Republican Jean Schmidt beat Hackett and will replace Rob Portman, who left Congress this year after being named U.S. trade representative by Bush.
Schmidt is a well-known, experienced Republican who headed the Cincinnati-area Right to Life.
Hackett initially opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq as a war that "set a bad precedent," but said now the United States can't "cut and run."
Portman consistently dominated elections in the heavily-GOP Cincinnati-area district. Democrats had been hoping a strong showing by Hackett would be a good sign before midterm elections.

Pataki and Hillary....stick it!!!!!!!
Not a good day? Last time I checked we still won!!
Any Democrat the opens their pie hole to articulate their socialism will be rewarded always with the losing end of the vote.
Their party IMO center around vice and socialism as their core values.
Works in some major cities, but that is all.

Late Update: Schmidt pulling ahead late. Did the call go out to Diebold?
However, it gets worse at the usually-rational MyDD (in the comments, not the posts):
Bye-bye demoncrat BUMP!!
Guess Hackett just couldn't hack it with Rush pounding away at him, eh? Some Marine. His Iraq war 'veteran' status is reminiscent of one F'n Kerry. Everything done by this kind of person is all about appearances and nothing about real 'soul'.
Hackett is an embarrassment to the USMC.
Hackett/hack-it? (tee-hee)
Yep, another Dem exposed as a phony.
Rush must have helped afterall, eh?
The fact that the Rats had to lie is immaterial. They are liars, and will always lie when they think it helps. Which it does.
Turnout is low in special elections. So what? Why couldn't it be low on their side as well as ours?
Think, people. Jeez.
