Major development in Brooke Wilberger case (missing college student in Oregon)

CORVALLIS, Ore. - KATU News has learned that investigators are about to announce a significant breakthrough in the case involving the disappearance of Brooke Wilberger.

Police are not saying specifically if they have made an arrest, but they are giving every indication that Wednesday afternoon they will be sharing information about a major step forward in the case - a breakthrough culminating a year and two months of investigation.

Brooke Wilberger's disappearance is a mystery that has loomed in the minds of many for more than a year - how does a 19-year-old woman simply vanish while cleaning lampposts at a Corvallis apartment complex?

Police say they are ready to provide some answers to that mystery and will be speaking about the case at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. The Corvallis Police Department, Benton County District Attorney and family members of Brooke Wilberger are expected to attend.

Although it is not clear at this point what exactly they will announce at the news conference, most recently, investigators announced a connection to a green minivan tied to one of two key persons of interest. Police now say they know where that van is, although they have not said whether they have searched it for evidence.

Two months ago, police also wanted to hear from someone named 'Brian,' who placed a 911 call to report seeing a van of the same description erratically. The call came in about an hour after Brooke disappeared from Rickreall, a town located about an hour away from Corvallis. Police say they never heard from that caller, but have been able to move forward in the case anyway.

Two persons of interest remain in the case - one that police say came on their radar screen in December and another in February or March. Police have specifically indicated that one of these persons of interest is not a threat to the public, meaning that person may already be in jail for a crime unrelated to the Brooke Wilberger case.

As for the news conference, it is scheduled for Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. and KATU News plans to carry it live both on the air and on the web.

I heard on our evening news (here in Portland) that they have charged a man, who is already in custody in a New Mexico jail, for the aggravated murder of Brooke. Apparently he's in jail there for rape and kidnapping of an exchange student.

My heart and prayers go out to her family....they are to be at the news conference tomorrow.

Channel 6 (KOIN?) is having a Police/Media event to discuss the Murder Case findings at 2pm.

What a shame. She was a young Lady who had her life all set on the right path mentally and spiritually healthy sweet young gal who for no good reason other than some drug/booze induced pervert nut case had a whim.

I agree with you Blackie Hang 'em High.

I heard on the news last night he was on his way over here to Newport for a Court Date on a DUI the day Brook was abducted.
The suspects sister is totally supporting Brooks family in seeing he gets what is coming to him.

He has been a lesion on society most of his life and his family is very forthcoming to that fact and are not standing by him what so ever. Good for them.

Unfortunetly Spunky I will be in a Dentist chair. : (

It is KOIN though.

OK Now for a tin foil moment.
I don't claim to be a psychic Detective but for months I have had thoughts of her body being in a silver metal drainage tube the huge ones that you can walk into crouched down near a field. The thought came to mind one night going to sleep and just has stuck in my gut. OK Tin Foil hat off.

From article: "Benton County authorities have called a 2 p.m. news conference today in Corvallis to release details about how they connected Courtney to Wilberger's abduction."

"This is the correct guy and we'll have more information," Noble said."

Were you able to hear how they connected him to Courtney?

Since they have not found her body it is very curious to me how they even know for sure she is dead and that he did it.

From what I heard on the news today, they had tips of a green van driving erratically in the area of the time of her abduction - he had a van matching the description and was supposed to be in the area at that time - they found his van and have it impounded - evidence (they won't specify exactly what) in the van led them to charge him with her rape and murder. The grand jury brough down 19 charges based on the evidence they were presented. Since they have to wait until he stands trial for the kidnapping and rape in NM first, they are keeping lids on it for now.

Perverts like this often keep "trophies" from their victims. Also, it's possible they recovered some forensic evidence from the van.
