Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto

Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

Passenger jet on fire at Pearson airport

Last updated Aug 2 2005 05:56 PM EDT

CBC News

...

One passenger, Roel Bramar, told CBC News that he saw lightning just as the plane landed in a torrential downpour.

"I'm sure that the bad weather was responsible," said Bramar, who was not injured and managed to scramble off the plane by means of an emergency chute. He was the second person off the plane, he said.

...

"We had a hell of a roller-coaster going down the ravine," Bramar said. "All I could think of was 'Get off!'"

...

"There was quite a downpour. The visibility was really bad, with lots of lightning," said John Finlay, a CBC journalist who was at the airport at the time of the accident.

At mid-afternoon Tuesday, a spokesperson with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority said lightning was causing technical problems with the airport's lightning-detection system. All aircraft had been grounded for safety reasons as a result, largely to protect gound crews.

The apology is upthread. Still pretty funny, showing up out of the blue!

Surviving passenger OLIVIER DUBOS (OH-LEEV-YAY DOO-BO) said there were no cabin lights on the plane for a minute before landing, but his English was a bit spotty, and he might have meant something else.

I heard parts of that interview, but was unable to report back for a few moments b/c my kids were totally fed up with me hogging all the media outlets in the house. ;)

"The crew didn't do that and I would like to know WHY!"

Because they were surrendering to the Canadian military....they had they arms in the air in the traditional French greeting.

Never mind...putting bong away.

News conference: plane overran runway by 200 meters. Can't confirm, but believed to be 297 passengers and 12 crewmembers, no known fatalities, 14 minor injuries. Everything unconfirmed.

> What does creationism have to do with an airplane crash?

Didn't Fred once say
believing evolution
is like believing

a plane crash might cause
a functioning trailer park
to form all at once?

Why?

Because it's his living room, and he controls the lightning?

I'm surprised he didn't tell him, "I hope you enjoyed your flight."

It doesn't take much to be an on-air interviewer, does it?

According to an earlier post #455, one of the passengers said the power went out about a minute before crashing.

Stupid reporter alert for the CBC. The 340 holds a lot more than 200 people.

Makes you wonder about the accuracy of the press's reporting on topics you know little about.

"You need a rest."

Not only that but he also holds a 1997 FR sign up date. I'd kill to have discovered FR 7 or 8 years ago! I missed the seminal years! I've seen the historical screen shots of FR circa '97 thanks to the Way Back Machine, but that's about it.

I think 14 minor injuries means "of however many there are, we have so far been told of 14."

As example, the figures 291 and 251 for passenger count are still being used interchangeably.

"Hit by lightening as landing and then lost all power" seems most likely.

Steve Shaw, VP of GTAA, now on TV saying 297 passengers and 12 crew with some injuries no reported fatalities.
