Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto

Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

Haven't heard that yet.
Still listening to CFRB. Trying to report things as I hear them.
Previous poster says he heard everyone got off.

I'm quite literally looking out the window - smoke everywhere, but I also heard that passengers are being picked up by drivers on the highway! They may have all gotten out safely. My secretary called from her cell and said it is pandemonium.

Truly a miracle. I was thinking most had perished from the looks of those photos and the delay in getting emergency vehicles out there.

Believe it was a workday (perhaps a Friday). Four friends went down on that flight...were returning from a business trip to Florida, so I'm nearly certain it was a weekday. In fact I didn't realize they were on the plane until the passenger list was printed on a Sunday...read it sitting by the pool...Ugggh!

Yeah, it should have crashed short of the runway if it was a typical downburst.

That's what I thought, and if it's true that there were survivors, that would seem to make a downburst highly unlikely. The passengers wouldn't have time to react.

That is the -600, very long range jet. Thai flys them JFK to Bangkok non stop.

The crashed one is -300, shorter range, more pax.

The 401 is basically an eastern extension of I-94, but that is one of the busiest sections; about 320,000 cars a day travel on it. That section is 16 lanes wide.

Um... why would that be wild ass speculation? We were operating under the assumption this happened on takeoff.

If it's so "wild-ass", why are the struggling airlines about to pour billions down the drain on anti-missile systems? There was an attempt on an El-Al Airliner last year in Africa. Did we win the War on Terror already and no one told me?

BTW, for more wild-ass speculation, see "CNN, September 11, 2001: 'We think it's pilot error'"

It must give you chills to be looking at that scene in real time. Thanks for sharing what you see.

EVERYBODY had it originally as a Lufthansa 737 crashing on takeoff.

Hope that is true. The 401 bridge is the freeway in the bottom of the TV shot. A long way from the plane, but would make sense if there was a heavy storm after they got out. And if the 4:07 landing time is true, then it was about 20 minutes from the crash until the TV camera was on CNN, time for the evacuees to have moved from the plane to under the bridge.

However I'm a bit skeptical, since I don't recall seeing much movement by the ambulances on the end of the bridge on the plane side of the creek, which is visible in the TV shot.

"WBBM radio in Chicago had a man whose daughter was on the flight. She said she and others escaped the plane and huddled under a bridge over the ravine for safety. She called him from her cell phone."

Thank you for the clarification. I thought it was the guys wife.
I am listening to CFRB in Toronto. They have the guy on hold, trying to get is daughter on the line.
