so that those who choose to smoke can then get treated for bronchitis, lung cancer, MI, TIA, stroke, etc.

That problem was already taken care of by the tobacco lawsuits.....Your concern now is getting your Fed Govt.to pay your state for the alleged medical costs...... LOL!

I'm glad to hear it.

I would much rather sit down and have a meal or a drink with someone like you in an establishment that is smoke free by choice than not have the choice of what type of atmosphere I would prefer to patronize.

I watched far too many of my friends with bars and restaurants financially hurt in Delaware to have any tolerance for anyone who pushes for the heavy hand of government to take care of their personal bugaboos.

Not one person was forced to breathe secondhand smoke. Not a single one.

But, but, but....they are supposed t be able to go where ever they want without being offended.....

Bar and restaurant workers didn't have to seek employment in an establishment that allowed smoking.

You are introducing fact here, only emothion is permitted.

Customers did not have to patronize businesses that allowed smoking.

see above

Why is this such a difficult concept for you to grasp?

Selfishness.

Why do you have to run whining and crying to the nanny state every time you see something you don't like?

Because it is easier.....they do not have to take responsibility for themselves.

The socialists will tell you that things will adjust soon, but I can attest that here in California it's been well over five years since the clamp went on...such businesses NEVER recover.

You would be amazed at the number of CA FReepers that will call you a liar on that statement.

In CA, as well as DE and NY the way the socialists have gotten around that lie is to use tax revenue to claim the bans do not hurt..........what they fail to inform you is that they include catering, take out, fast food and to-go liquor sales in those numbers.

They did it in Delaware.........after decades of fighting the sale of alcohol on Sunday, within months after the ban went into effect package stores and then taverns were permitted to be open on Sunday. Boom, no decline in alchol revenue....which is all a crock of BS, but it's typical liberal feel-good BS, therefore it's OK.

Many bars have set up a small area where smokers can go if they want to light up.

How would you feel about a tiny area, well-ventilated, set up for people who don't want to inhale second-hand smoke? Would you feel all alone and discriminated against?

Until some legislature has the guts to outlaw tobacco smoking, this amounts to pure and simple discrimination, based on someone's lifestyle. And if they can outlaw smoking in private businesses, how long before they decide to outlaw drinking beer in your private residence? Or farting in public? Or wearing white after Labor Day?

I hope the absurdity of this approach is not lost on you.

We took a trip downeast last weekend with friends.

Stopped on the way back in a little local pub that's been in business for years for lunch (they serve great burgers.)

In the past, this place was jammed to the rafters on a Saturday.

There were four other patrons in the place when we got there.

Three of them smoked (so did the bartender.)

The conversation naturally turned to the smoking ban and the barrenness of the place.

The bartender unequivocally stated that business "sucked" and that the smoking ban was killing them.

Of course, it's a workingman's pub, so just as well.

They're not as enlightened as their betters.

You know, the ones who were panting at the chance to flock to such a place, if only it weren't for the stinky smokers.

Woman is arrested because of no smoking in a bar. WGBA-TV

Appleton - The first weekend of the Appleton workplace smoking ban went without a noticed violation, according to police. A woman claiming a violation was arrested.Appleton police arrested Leslie Fraser for filing a false police report. She called police claiming that Fraser's Bar, on Northland Avenue, was "filled with smokers" late Friday night.

The bar's owner, Jim Fraser, said when police came in, they found no smokers, ashtrays, or cigarette butts. This led police to arrest Ms. Fraser, the bar owner's wife. She is being charged with obstructing officers.

Several bars NBC26 contacted reported sales down from this time last year, but none of the owners or managers said it was reason to panic.

Any of them that do are braindead as to the attendance at their favorite local places...or wondering why those favorites just kinda faded away.

I know what you mean - but they've been calling me a liar for years when I provide factual information about how bad these bans are for business, regardless of location.

My first hand experience is not in California, but Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.........Not only have I witnessed the increase in MD and VA business since the DE ban went into effect - I have been privy to the books of owners in all 3 states...........so I truly know exactly what the DE ban has done to business. I understand that PA and NJ businesses near the state line have seen similar shifts.

Here's one the great statements defending individual property rights -

"The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the force of the Crown. It may be frail; its roof may shake; the wind may blow through it; the storms may enter, the rain may enter--but the King of England cannot enter; all his forces dare not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement."

William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, in a 1763 speech to the House of Lords

"Premises" are premises.

If the deck's attached to the bar, smoking's a no-no.

However, they might be able to get an exception for "decks." Of course, when it's -22 degrees and windy, some Appleton "decks" might not be real popular...
