Bush Circumvents Senate, Appoints Bolton

WASHINGTON - President Bush sidestepped the Senate and installed embattled nominee John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations on Monday, ending a five-month impasse with Democrats who accused Bolton of abusing subordinates and twisting intelligence to fit his conservative ideology.

"This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a war and a vital debate about UN reform," Bush said. He said Bolton had his complete confidence.

Bush put Bolton on the job in a recess appointment — an avenue available to the president when the Congress is in recess. Under the Constitution, a recess appointment during the lawmakers' August break would last until the next session of Congress, which begins in January 2007.

Bolton joined Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at the announcement ceremony and said he was honored and humbled by the president's appointment. "It will be a distinct privilege to be an advocate for America's values and interests at the U.N. and, in the words of the U.N. charter, to help maintain international peace and security," he said.

Bush said that Bolton's nomination had been supported by a majority of the Senate but that "partisan delaying tactics by a handful of senators" had denied the nominee the job.

Bush had refused to give up on Bolton even though the Senate had voted twice to sustain a filibuster against his nominee. Democrats and some Republicans had raised questions about Bolton's fitness for the job, particularly in view of his harsh criticism of the United Nations.

How about, "Bush Circumcises Senate."

With Chuck Schumer, where would they know where to stop?

You are exactly right. That, plus the fact that Lee is and always has been a state socialist down to his fingertips, is what made that particular recess appointment so offensive.

A majority of the Senate stood ready to confirm John Bolton. The Democrats preferred to play politics with our national security. It was extraordinary of them to deny a vital post to a man in whom the President had confidence. Fortunately President Bush had patience and outsmarted the Democrats. In the end, their dog and pony show did them no good whatsoever.

The Comcast homepage announces that Bush has appointed "controversial" nominee, John Bolton. I don't recall Bill Lann Lee being called "controversial" when Clinton recess appointed him.

"Democrats and some Republicans had raised questions about Bolton's fitness for the job, particularly in view of his harsh criticism of the United Nations."

Would these be the same political hacks that criticize everything done by the White House and have to solution to the issue? Now, when W nominates a man who not only is critical but is proactive in the solution of the problems, they find him too harsh to serve?

Isn't Bolton's attitude toward action what made America a world power?

What a bunch of un-American cowards (and jealous of Bolton, too).

It is about time!! The MSM is big on reporting that President BUsh really doesn't want the UN to succeed. We can bet our bottom dollar on the fact that if the President wanted the UN to fail, he certainly would not have appointed Ambassador Bolton. This is the man to kick butt and take names....and I hope he starts today.

Oh puh_leez, the Dems care about national security, afterall look at what a big deal they make trying to protect Valerie Plume who was vital to our national security. I really don't know how we are gonna to survive without undercover super-secret double agent Valerie to keep us safe.
