Ilkhanid era site on Kish Island yields new artifacts

TEHRAN -- A team of archaeologists working at the ruins of Harireh on Kish Island recently discovered the remains of an oven, kitchenware, and coal, the head of the team announced on Friday.

Saman Surtiji said that the new discovery is from the kitchen of an Ilkhanid era mansion in Harireh.

“Beside the ruins of the mansion, several wells, cisterns, as well charred jars and bowls were discovered. Pieces of ornaments including a glass bracelet and a brass ring were also discovered in the lower part of the building,” he explained.

The discovery of the ornaments in the kitchen proves that it was a place where women traversed, he said, adding that some sheep and cow bones as well as the remains of fish which were larger than modern fish were found at the site.

Harireh is one of the few Ilkhanid era towns in Iran which has not been completely excavated.

There is also some inclusive evidence that the town may have been founded during the Seljuk era.

The town is mostly residential.

Experts hope to give it a new life by introducing it to tourists and making it one of the cultural attractions of Kish Island.
