KHARTOUM, Sudan - A plane carrying the former rebel who ascended to Sudans No. 2 leadership post has disappeared after losing contact, a Sudanese Cabinet minister said Monday on state television, contradicting earlier reports.
The statement came hours after state television interrupted its regular programming to say that Vice President John Garang has landed safely at a camp in southern Sudan after his flight from Uganda was reported missing in bad weather on Sunday.
Communications Minister Abdel-Basit Sabdarat said Sudans president had ordered the countrys air force to search for the aircraft.
Garang, 60, is a charismatic figure whose leadership is seen as key to ensuring the endurance of the peace agreement signed in January. The accord ended 21 years of war by providing for power sharing between the Khartoum government and Garangs southern-based rebels.

oops...
Let us pray that this does not engender another Rwanda.
Another Ron Brown oops.
Jaohn Garang is to the situation in Sudan what Ahmed Shah Massoud was to Afghanistan.
Osama assasinated Massoud to curry favor with the Taliban just a few days before the 9/11 attacks.
From what we read, the US and Osama are in a struggle for influence over the Sudanese government. Maybe he did them a "favor" by arranging for the crash of the Christian leader that the West forced the Sudanese to make peace with?
Hope not.
Something isn't sitting right with me about this...
It was Andrea Mitchell !!!!!!!!! She had a Manpad!!!!!
All kidding aside, this could be the start of something.
With all the trouble in Sudan, will it be another Rwanda?

My thought, exactly! Is there a message here that one messes with Dr. Rice's entourage at one's peril? Mess with Dr. Rice and Space Command will destroy just about anything with phasers!
That's good.
This is extremely bad news if the CHRISTIAN vice-president has just been assassinated (on the job for less than a month, brought in to help improve things after the central Islamic Sudanese government had killed 2,000,000 Christians and traditional African religions in the civil war). It is however, what governments like that do without any hesitation.
How many degrees of separation between this guy and Oil for Food?
Bingo. Nail, head.
Which suggests, if the pattern follows, that a major attack is imminent with Osama turning up on Sudan. Not out of the question....but hopefully wrong.
