FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Never mind officials voiding a $50 ticket for indecent exposure, or an explanation from county officials that a ranger who issued the citation to the breast-feeding mother was inexperienced.
Dorian Ryan said she wants an apology for what she called a "humiliating and degrading" experience.
"This isn't right. Women shouldn't be harassed for breast-feeding their children," Dorian Ryan said.
Colorado lawmakers agree. A law passed last year gives women the right to breast feed anywhere she's allowed to be in public.
Ryan, 43, was ticketed for indecent exposure July 14 when she breast fed her son at the Carter Lake swim beach in Larimer County. She was shielded from view by two umbrellas and a towel.
An inexperienced park ranger mistakenly issued the ticket, said Dan Rieves, manager of the Blue Mountain District, which oversees the beach. Park officials have voided the ticket.
Rieves, who has been in contact with Ryan, said a written apology would be sent Friday.

That's activism.... It's like any other demonstration to change tolerance, sometimes it works, sometimes it offends. Activism exists as a counterforce against the types of attitudes here.... the equal and opposite reaction to "women should stay home until the child is weaned."
However each generation has his strengths and weaknesses -- you've noted a number of their weaknesses (you forgot rampant cocktail hours, Cuba, Las Vegas, the track, denigration of women and minorities, cookie-cutterism, at least).
They had strengths too -- perserverance, wanting the best, joy in what they had or might gain. Willingness to work, obedience to authority.

This is how you view women who can't or choose not to breastfeed? Really classy. You sound like a real catch.
Just a small clarification. To assess the greatness of a generation, one has to look at the differences from other generations, and this is what I focused on.

Perseverance was there, but it cannot be even compared to that of Pioneers. Wanting the best is the least common denominator of all American immigrants of all generations. Willingness to work --- granted, it was there --- is also a staple American ethic (which, incidentally, the "greatest" did NOT pass to their children to the same extent). And, obedience to authority is patently un-American (that is a trait of those who grow up under and get accustomed to socialism). Perhaps you meant "discipline," but then is it also not particular to that "greatest" generation.
The only distinct attribute I find is that they fought and won WWII, for which I am grateful. Buy even here, all important decisions were made by their parent that were in charge (it's the 40-70 yearl-olds that run the country).

Certainly adopted babies and those who are not thriving on mother's milk for one of the above reasons should be bottle fed.
Those who choose to bottle feed are doing their best to parent with their knowledge at the time and should not be judged. My husband's cousin did not breastfeed due to a thyroid problem. However, she and her husband cuddled and nurtured their baby (whether feeding or not) in a very close, loving, and natural way.

It's tough to generate sympathy for some victims. Even when they are right.
But what point can you make with such an extreme example?
First, yes, this is offensive.
Second, what about the guy with the enormous, catsup and egg yolk spotted beard, who sits next to you at the shelter and, uh, farts? What are we to conclude? Males with facial hair are prohibited from using the shelter? We'll not issue passes to guys who pass gases?
People need to show normal consideration and try not to give egregious offense. And we all need to abstain from sweeping judgments like "no breast-feeding" or "no men with beards" or -- well, as regards farts, I suppose I treat it the way I do stinky FReeper posts: I just get up and stroll away---

You also forgot that once this becomes acceptable, a host of other ills will also become acceptable.
Horse hockey. Public breast feeding laws have been passed in a number of places. I know of no efforts to get these laws overturned. As a matter of fact, I never heard of any serious opposition to passing them in the first place. I've also never heard of any incidents where there has been a problem with the public over such activity.
The point is that it already is accepted. You'll have to get the laws changed if you don't like it. Good luck.
