India, China account for only 1.6 % of jobs from US firms

Washington, July. 29 (PTI): India and China account for only 1.6 per cent of the total employment of US multinationals by way of outsourcing, the Government's figures have revealed, dispelling notions spread by critics of offshoring that the two countries are swallowing American jobs.

Latest figures released by the US Commerce Department show that by contrast, Canada was home to more than three times as many workers for US multinationals as China. The UK was home to about nine times as many workers as India.

Also, for each job in low- or mid-wage countries in 2003, US companies employed more than 10 workers at home. The author of the report, Raymond Mataloni, said the numbers "don't provide a lot of support for the notion that massive offshoring is going on."

Apparently the people producing this survey never had to call for tech support for their computers, printers, phones etc during this study.

Doesn't really explain what market those products are produced for. Or that corporations wholly set up within India or China isn't a "multi-national."

If a corp goes offshore to produce products then sends it back is different is not statistically comparable to those producing for the host country. It does differ morally.

Not really. As posts #2 and #4 demonstrate, some folks aren't going to let minor obstacles like facts interfere with their beliefs or their whining.

I don't understand, somebody explain:

FReepers don't want to sell to China, and don't want walmart to buy anything, either.
FReepers don't want to sell or buy anything involved with NAFTA.
Freepers don't want anything to do with CAFTA.
FReepers don't want any offshoreing.
FReepers hate the EUroweenies.
FReepers absolutely hate imported oil

BUT, FReepers want our wonderful standard of living maintained in an everchanging world.

I get so confused sometimes.

At least that's somewhat intelligible. The last one I called must have been in Ubangi, she just made a bunch of clicking noises with her tongue.

Everybody hates the EUroweenies, but as far as the rest of that goes I don't know what in the hell you're talking about.

Because certain asinine Freepers pine for the short period (1946-1972) when unionized American workers got paid a ton of money for polishing a screw and consumer products were relatively expensive (one TV or car in the house, compared to several and at least two now). This was also the period when Democrats dominated politics and the income tax was sky high.

Costa Rica actually has a highly educated population and one of the largest Intel facilities in the world. Nevertheless, we don't have much to fear from CAFTA, as the total exports of all the CAFTA countries combined for a year equal the monthly volume of exports from China.

I was reading that article in the WSJ about Costa Rica....Dell is betting people would rather talk to them than Sanjay. I had a particular painful experience with an SBC rep in India last week.

Emotion gets the better of some folks. Oh well. I notice that in these kinds of stories--remember when we were in danger of going under because Japan was buying us up, back in the early 90's? It was one of Pat Buchanan's crusades which he strangely forgot all about--the facts DO tend to sink in eventually. Once people stop resisting the wave of reality, that is.

Right on!

Free trade, which is supposed to be devastating the economy has...just brought in another quarter of stellar growth and low unemployment. Overpaid, unionized jobs are moving overseas because the UNIONS priced US workers out of the market with high wages and benefits. Good riddence to bad jobs invented by a New Deal socialist cancer.

The numbers given for 2002 and 2003 are estimates.

http://www.bea.gov/bea/newsrelarchive/2005/mnc2003.htm

There was also a mention of "intermediate sales" which sounds like messing with the numbers a la Enron.
