China's One-Child Policy Tips Scales - 25 Million Men Could Remain Single

ROME, JULY 29, 2005 (Zenit.org).- China might soon become the most populous country of bachelors, reported a missionary of the Pontifical Institute of Foreign Missions.
Father Giancarlo Politi, speaking on Vatican Radio, said that the one-child policy, instituted to "maintain control over the population, so that it wouldn't grow enormously," favors the birth of boys among Chinese families.
"There is still a need to seek by all means to have at least a male child," said the priest.
As a result of the policy, instituted in 1979, an estimated 25 million young men in China might remain single for life.
"The family without heirs leaves the couple in a relationship of virtual sterility, also from the human and not just the procreative point of view," he said.
This policy is "truly inhuman," stated the missionary, in that it stipulates "compulsory abortion for those without permission to have a second child," said Father Politi.
Off the books
The policy has also "given origin to a practice of having children outside the law."
Many children are not registered in China. "It will not be possible to indicate the number because it will be speculation," said the priest.
Although families with money might be able to obtain the registration, "it is true that all those born without permission do not exist" legally, and are the target of blackmail "at many levels," he said.
He said the law was instituted to redress the effects of an earlier policy based on the motto: "'The more we are the better,' as this way we can face the enemy and win."

I think the problem is overstated. 25 million surplus men in a nation of 1 billion+++ isn't a huge amount. It's like having 5 million surplus guys in the USA. Think about it, if 5 million guys came to the USA there would be more competition for girls for sure but it's not like single girls would disappear. You'd just need a bit more game to get a girl. Also a 25 million surplus implies that 25 million people will be without girlfriends at any given time, not that 25 million would be without girls for life. A point worth repeating. Another solution would be for men to marry later, women earlier.

Might be a good place to invest in a gay bar. With 25 million permenantly single men there will be a good market for night spots in the New China.

You would not believe the kind of dreams I have. Sometimes I'll be stuck at the top at one of those 1000 foot radio towers or I'll be on a raft in the middle of the ocean by myself. Just before 9/11, I dreamed of an airplane crashing into a building (only it was an apparent accident. After 9/11, I dreamed that Dick Cheney was in charge and he was giving a speech to the nation and while doing so, bugs started coming through my air ducts and on TV, Dick Cheney started screaming because he was surrounded by bugs also. The entire nation was being attacked by killer bugs!
I should really start writing novels based on these wacked out dreams of mine.

No they won't. China has been rapidly REDUCING the troop strength of their armed forces in recent years. That's today's army.

This is why the Catholic Church constantly tells everyone to not use contraceptives. Pope JP2 was especially insistent for Filipinos to obey God's Law on reproduction. Filipino women will satiate Chinese men's desire for making families.
It's not a perfect theory, but it's a workable one.
Strategists would joke that the North Korean horde would move right through the DMZ and stop at the first super market in their path because the NK army was so hungry. Perhaps the Chinese Navy/Marine Corps will become so lonely that they'll skip Taiwan and head straight for the Philippines. This wouldn't be the first time that Catholic women have soothed the rage of would be conquerors (reference Irish women and communities that Baptized Vikings, and Norman Vikings that settled in Western France now Normandy).

That's one heck of an army. My great grandfather predicted that the greatest threat to the US would come from China.

receipt for disaster.

I heard a discussion recently in which it was pointed out that all those one-child sons and grandsons will soon be the sole support for aging parents and grandparents. In other words, China has turned the natural order of things topsy-turvy.
With China's obsession now in creating economic wealth, the nation may not be able to send those one-sons to war.
Think about it.

Sound like China really needs the Catholic Church. Lots of openings for celibate monks and priests....

All those single men, guess they'll just have to go into
the Army.

This "surplus" of men is going to be a problem for China. What will they do with all these "extra" men? Will they become gay? Will they need to find wars to fight to kill them off? Will they become a crime problem? Guess they didn't think of this when they were killing off all those baby girls.
