Ku Klux Klansman-turned-Senator Robert Byrd has won passage of a bill that would fund a memorial to civil rights icon, Dr. Martin Luther King.
Byrd, who filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act for 14-straight hours, won "a significant political victory," according to the Associated Press, by securing $10 million in funding for the King monument.
Polls show the eight-term Democrat facing a stiff re-election challenge this year if popular West Virginia Rep. Shelly Moore Capito gets into the race - with state Republicans promising to make Byrd's Klan past an issue.
Byrd "has spent years trying to rehabilitate his reputation," the AP noted - suggesting the King project was part of that effort.
The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, which has already raised $40 million for the memorial, would have to raise another $10 million in private funds before it could receive the Byrd grant.
The King memorial will be built on a four-acre site next to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial on Washington, D.C.'s National Mall.
Dr. King's family has yet to comment on Byrd's attempt to use the civil rights leader's memory to repair his Klan-scarred image.
I didn't know that old Byrd was still alive.
He's up for re-election next year. I hope he loses, but it'll be fun to see how far he goes to make himself look good to the public. This smells of political posturing as bad as Hillary's "move" to the right.
I like that
SYMBOLISM OVER SUBSTANCE...
So now he wants to join the King Klux Klan...
The FBI should release the files on MLK, so we can take a good look.
And Ted Kennedy is going to oversee the installation of higher guard rails on all bridges in the USA.
Finally.
C'mon now! He's "growing in office".
Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior
long name, takes three signs on the sign posts to fit it all in.
This is about as ironic as Ted Kennedy speaking at a temperance meeting!
Thanks for the assist. I believe you're correct.
I just remembered on a lot of the articles he wrote in the '60's, he signed them Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
That reminds me of something funny on the Daily Show after President Reagan died and people were considering renaming things after him.
This guy suggested renaming the Ronald Reagan International Airport the Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan International Airport.
Maybe you had to be there. But it was hilarious.
Byrd ought to leave well enough alone. Just ride off into the sunset.
Isn't this like Ted Kennedy holding swimming lessons?
Seriously, I think that the way to use this issue against Byrd is not just to say, "Byrd was in the Klan" but to juxtapose his current Martin Luther King eulogizing persona against his Klan past and ask the questions, who is the real Robert Byrd? Is there a real Robert Byrd? Make him out to be a flip flopper, like Kerry. He'll have a hard time wriggling out of that one.
I have Ramone's stuff, it will never die. Imagine what Sheets has planned for himself when he croaks
Yes, and I resent it. It's not his to give.
I read that the Ramones make more money now than they ever did. I used to teach high school a couple of years ago and was struck by how many of the kids there were Ramones fans.
