"laser-guided 9mm Beretta pistols?"
he's gotta be kidding!
Ya don't need laser-guided pistols to kill flies...
Since we've already spent over 300 billion on this war, I think the troops can complete their mission without "laser-guided pistols! LOL
It just might be time for Gen. Chaves and his National Guard unit to rotate back to the states. We could sure use them on the Mexican border.

A pistol has a cylinder, not a magazine
While our soldiers are adjusting and calibrating their equipment, an enemy is going to sneak up behind and smack them in the head with a rock.
I know the old -60 is outdated, but it is still in service, and the replacement is coming on-line soon.
Um, yeah, that was the thing that jumped out at me more than anything else. It's no wonder so many former CIA agents feel no need to keep their secrecy oaths when even those with active clearances don't feel bound by the rules. That's where the investigation needs to begin: who's leaking secret information to the press, and why on earth aren't they going to lose their job because of it?
So if an M2 or a Mark 19 is considered "excessive", what about an M60 or M249? Do they have some sort of mount whereby those smaller machineguns can be mounted on convoy vehicles?

Thanks, my HTML and Google-Fu is weak ;)
I can't believe this is a REAL story
Sounds like I don't know what
A general would really make statements like that
Yea, they all fit on the different mounts with different mounting brackets. The 249 is ineffective in killing the bad guys without anything between the gun and themselves. (personal experience)
I'd hate to see what how many rounds it would take to kill them when they are in a car or truck.
The M-60 is still in use by some units, but the M-240B and G are more prevalent.
________
9mm does not have the knock down power to defend our Troops. Time to go back to .45 and start making hamburger. And laser guided 9mm rounds? Maybe this is another secret leaked out by the dims over there? /s
The general is a stupid P.C. bastard. He needs to be replaced. I'll take an M-4 over a 9mm of any make any day.
"the answer was to equip soldiers with laser-guided 9 mm Beretta pistols"
Me thinks the Washington Slimes has been hoodwinked.
Just an observation and suprised it hasn't been brought up yet,
"...a pistol is what you use to fight your way back to the rifle you should have been carrying in the first place.."
(original author unknown....to me)
Top sends
It is true that a lot of civilians are being killed because they are mistaken for insurgents or terrorists, but this is not a result of the wrong weapons. This is due to the level of stress our soldiers are subjected to in convoys. The single most dangerous place in Iraq is in a military convoy. They are fired on and ambushed routinely. The fact the ambushes are often conducted from suicide vehicles means every vehicle is a potentially deadly target. Just because you don't see a weapon doesn't mean you are safe. It is not unusual therefore that soldiers often fire on someone who simply makes a slightly suspicious move. It is terribly unfortunate and a very complex problem, but not one that will be fixed with better weapons. A 50 caliber through the grill is the warning shot. The next shot is right through the windshield. I don't know if anyone has a solution.
"Me thinks the Washington Slimes has been hoodwinked."
I think so too.
If you are loaded for bear and end up hunting a mouse, you have enough. The other way around and you end up bearcrap.
If there were fewer civillian spectators, or they cleared the area, there would be fewer killed/injured as a result.
I do understand that in this type of warfare not all civillians will be able to get out of the area, if they are either uninformed as to the presence of the combatants (Hell, any stranger would be a good reason to find something elsewhere to do), or are being held hostage directly or through implied threats against them should they try to leave the area, as their absence might trip a flag.
I would imagine that terrorists who have succeded in divesting themselves of their weapons, once wounded, might claim to be innocent civillians, just for the propaganda value, which All Jizerria and our own MSM would play up for them.
I still do not see that as an excuse to divest our troops of the most effective arms and possibly place them in greater peril than their job already entails. They aren't walking around with a golf bag full of options, they have what they have when they need to use it. Lets make sure they have what they need.
Generally attributed to Clint Smith, founder of Thunder Ranch.
Jihadists suddenly turn into workers at the baby milk factory when they are injured and their chums desert them.
