MY mom always wanted to be a writer. In 1926, when she was 18, she applied for a job at The Washington Post. An editor there told her that the characters she'd meet as a reporter were far too shady for a nice young lady.

There is a lot here that Dowd had no intention of disclosing. Have fun mining it.

Too bad she never found a way to be honest.

Besides raising five kids in high heels That's not necessarily nice to the kids...especially the boys. They must have had a rough time in school wearing high heels.

"She loved Ronald Reagan and when he landed in a firestorm, she'd write to tell him to buck up."
Mom had more sense then her daughter.

She wrote me relentlessly when I moved to New York in 1981 with everything from fashion tips ("Hang your necklaces inside your blouse so your bra will catch them if the clasp breaks") to strategy on breakups ("Put all his pictures in a place you won't see them, preferably the trash") to health tips ("I hope you will never take a drink when you are unhappy. It would break my heart to think you had become a jobless derelict, an easy prey for unscrupulous men, me dead, and a family who held you in contempt because you had tossed aside your beauty, youth and talent.").Too bad Maureen didn't take her advice.

Maureen long ago gave up trying to emulate her mother (too much work and too many elite circle friends to impress) and set out to be the antithesis of Peggy Dowd. She's done a fair job of that, but now is realizing that Peggy Dowd's life was fuller, happier, and more influential than hers will ever be.
I predict she will wind up being what her mother feared most.

Who is the female? She doesn't look like any Maureen Dowd I've ever seen.

Catherine Zeta Jones, who is married, of course, to Michael Douglas. Who used to be the boyfriend of ... Maureen Dowd. The general concensus is that Poor Mo started spinning into the ozone not long after he dropped her for the aforementioned Ms. Jones.

The article was a very nice tribute to her Mother who just died. Can't you guys ever just see things without the blinders of politics? Just concede it was a nice article. Yeesh.

Sorry, I did not know.

"All I have to say is Michael Douglas is one lucky man." Even if CZJ had never entered his life, he would have to count himself among the truly fortunate for merely having rid himself of Dowd....
