What about Israel?

Pope condemns on Sunday terrorism in Iraq, Egypt, Turkey and Britain, but leaves out Israel; Foreign Ministry sources, 'This is legitimizing the murder of Jews'

By Diana Bahur-Nir

JERUSALEM - Papal envoy to Israel Archbishop Pietro Sambi was summoned to the Foreign Ministry where officials registered their displeasure at the statements of Pope Benedict XXVI.

The pope on Sunday condemned terrorism in Iraq, Egypt, Turkey and Britain, but leaves out the suicide bombing in Netanya.

Foreign Ministry officials expressed outrage over the exclusion: "The evasion of the pope begs a response. Besides the assault on morality, the matter cannot be interpreted as anything but the justification as terror against Jews."

The sources also said that the pope's words would strengthen the hands of radicals.

"We hoped the new Pope, who talked about relations between the church and the Jewish people," said the officials.

"We expected that the pope would call for dialogue among the three religions that recognize Abraham as their father and would criticize terror that has brutally struck Jews when criticizing terror that has affected others."

Sambi met with Nimrod Barkan for a few hours; the papal envoy did not say how the Vatican answered or planned to answer the charge

Guess you can't beat the German out of these guys. Maybe those cries about Ratzinger being a Hitler Youth weren't that far off base.

Well, he also omitted mentioning Pakistani Shias and Sunnis shooting up each other's mosques. So should the government of Pakistan sent him a diplomatic protest as well? He mentioned as examples the major terrorist acts of recent occurrence, with dozens of casualties. IMHO, that should be enough.

Agreed.

I'm embarrassed for Israel that anyone would raise a stink over this.

Just the other day, I heard Bush talk about the London bombing without mentioning Israel. Maybe they should pull back their ambassador to the US.

Don't they have better things to worry about?

Agree 100%. It is petty and belittles all the attacks. Seems like a hollow attempt by the Sharon Gov't to distract from the big news of the day, that a corrupt mega-contributor to Sharon will be building a casino with the Arabs on the very Jewish land that Sharon is driving Jews off of in Gaza. Sharon is a despicable creep.

If you'd like to be on this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.

Well, in the last couple weeks Tony Blair left out Israel, as did George Bush. Condi condemned the bombing in Egypt, but not the murders in Gaza. Don't want to make the terrorist's angry after all.

"ein Papst", not "eine Pope". As one Michel Montaigne wrote some 440 yrs ago: "The philosophers are excellent people, and so are the farmers. But semi-education stinks!"

You have to think in terms of the kennedy pronunciation, here.

That's okay. Now Israel know who her true friends are:

PA condemns Netanya bombing

The Palestinian Authority has officially condemned the Netanya attack on the Hasharon Mall.

(07.12.05, 20:07)

I'll bet all the officials at the Foreign Ministry are greatly encouraged by those sincere sentiments.

"Pope condemns on Sunday terrorism in Iraq, Egypt, Turkey and Britain, but leaves out Israel..."

It does not surprise me in the least that he complained about terrorism in countries that support terrorism while neglecting to mention terrorism against Jews. European national leaders have done the same and have even convinced our President to do so, thanks to the lobbying of his followers and those of other large churches.

So can you please explain why the pope ignored the attack in Israel?

The Catholic church has historically not supported Israel or the Jewish faith.

I have a feeling you're Catholic... which shows your reaction was the "knee-jerk" variety since it didn't put any thought into the Church's past regarding Israel, but instead just tried to flame me.

I'm capable of being more objective since i'm not a member of either of those religions.

Actually, it's you who is the moron, as I'm sure your wife never fails to remind you. Ratzinger actually was a Hitler Youth (all German kids of that age were). I was being a bit facetious, but I guess you'd have to understand the background to get that... and being totally ignorant you're limping out of the starting gate in the Clueathon.
