What about Israel?

Pope condemns on Sunday terrorism in Iraq, Egypt, Turkey and Britain, but leaves out Israel; Foreign Ministry sources, 'This is legitimizing the murder of Jews'

By Diana Bahur-Nir

JERUSALEM - Papal envoy to Israel Archbishop Pietro Sambi was summoned to the Foreign Ministry where officials registered their displeasure at the statements of Pope Benedict XXVI.

The pope on Sunday condemned terrorism in Iraq, Egypt, Turkey and Britain, but leaves out the suicide bombing in Netanya.

Foreign Ministry officials expressed outrage over the exclusion: "The evasion of the pope begs a response. Besides the assault on morality, the matter cannot be interpreted as anything but the justification as terror against Jews."

The sources also said that the pope's words would strengthen the hands of radicals.

"We hoped the new Pope, who talked about relations between the church and the Jewish people," said the officials.

"We expected that the pope would call for dialogue among the three religions that recognize Abraham as their father and would criticize terror that has brutally struck Jews when criticizing terror that has affected others."

Sambi met with Nimrod Barkan for a few hours; the papal envoy did not say how the Vatican answered or planned to answer the charge

"Some anti-Catholic bigot I am; perhaps I ought to try harder to meet your expectations?"

I really don't care what's on your key ring. If you suggest Pope Benedict XVI believes killing Jews in terrorists attacks is justified, then your a bigot.

The question is open until something definitive is said on the matter. I knew where JP2 stood on this issue.

No, I think I'll leave that up to you. You have qualities in that regard I could never compete with...and I'll repeat, he is no John Paul II.

Well, it may be open to you. However, consider the following qoutes found at, "http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/Ratzinger.html,

"Rabbi David Rosen, the international director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee, said the choice of Ratzinger as Pope would bring continuity to Catholic-Jewish relations. “He has a deep commitment to this issue. And his own national background makes him sensitive to the dangers of anti-Semitism and the importance of Jewish-Catholic reconciliation,” Rosen said'

"Rabbi Israel Singer, chairman of the World Jewish Congress, called Ratzinger the architect of the “ideological policy to recognize, to have full relations with Israel.”"

"Cardinal Ratzinger played a key role on a number of issues related to Judaism and the Holocaust during the pontificate of John Paul II involved. For example, he personally prepared Memory and Reconciliation, the 1999 document outlining the church's historical “errors” in its treatment of Jews."

“He has shown this sensitivity countless times, in meetings with Jewish leadership and in important statements condemning anti-Semitism and expressing profound sorrow for the Holocaust,” said Abraham H. Foxman, Anti-Defamation League National Director. “We remember with great appreciation his Christmas reflections on December 29, 2000, when he memorably expressed remorse for the anti-Jewish attitudes that persisted through history, leading to ‘deplorable acts of violence’ and the Holocaust.

And finally, theres this from Israel Today,:

"But Israel’s former Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau disagrees. “I think that Cardinal Ratzinger, Benedict XVI, is one of the greatest friends of Israel in the Catholic Church,” Rabbi Lau said. “It is my hope that the new pope will build bridges between the Catholic Church and the Jewish people.”

I thought the mirror suggestion would be way over your head. I guess it wouldn't help to tell you about the pot and kettle? Nah, you're too hard at work trying to come up with those great zingers...don't strain anything.

We'll see. We're all in this war together and the absence of Western religious institutions in the fight is distressing to say the least.

OK, you dense moron!!!

I've had it with you!!!

You've got two goddamn options now:

Either you explain what's wrong with Pope Benedict XVI, since you say that he doesn't measure up to JP II, or STFU!!!

I'm with you. The guys that are shooting their mouth of about the pope being anti-jewish because of this obviously biased news article just make themselves look like idiots when you read the context of the quotes. Obiviously some of them have pre-conceptions about the church -- albeit misguided ones -- and they love to find an excuse to trot them out.

This would basically be like reporters asking an American League contender "So who are you going to have to get through to get to the World Series this year?" And the player says "Well, obviously Boston and New York are playing great...And the Angels won't be any pushovers either. We'll definitely have our work cut out for us against them - they're just the best."

And the next day, St. Louis is all up in arms because they were snubbed.

``It's surprising that one would have wanted to take the opportunity to distort the intentions of the Holy Father,'' Navarro-Valls said in the statement. ``Obviously the other week's grave attack in Netanya referred to by Israel falls under the general and unreserved condemnation of terrorism.''

IOW - You whiny, self-absorbed goofballs -- yes, we also abhor and deplore the awful terrorism that has killed innocent Jews, and condemn it. Just because we don't specifically say it each and every time a microphone is stuck in front of our face doesn't mean we don't think it. Oh, by the way, we pray for your largely secular society probably about 10 times as much as you pray for us -- but who's counting.

OK, whatever!!!

It speaks volumes of your intelligence and your integrity when you do drive-by character assassinations, and then cowardly refuse to defend the arguments you used to denigrate about an upstanding man such as Benedict XVI.

If you're incapable of anything other than bashing people based on out-of-context, manipulated information because it suits your religious bias, fine. But don't do it on a Pope News/Activism thread. Do it on the religion forum or the ihatecatholics.com forum (maybe your favorite).

P.S: Pope Ben may pray for your soul, whether you like it or not.

Oh i remember when he made his apology about ignoring the holocaust. But apologies only go so far when millions died due to inaction.

I'm not blaming the church for it, nor am i blaming the church for any of the current issues.

What i'm saying is Israel was ignored when he condemned the latest attacks and i find it quite interesting.

I never said the church was Anti-Jew. But history has shown that they have been in various instances.

And you have every right to defend your church and faith. But you should not blindly defend the church especially when they do something which is quite obviously wrong... like their hush hush attitude about the child abuse scandals in the catholic church.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against catholics.... just like I have nothing against you and i hope you don't take my criticism as a peronal attack on yourself because it definately isn't.

I just would like to see more even handedness.

Just a thought.... perhaps they ignored the israel issue because if they show open support.... it may ruffle some Arab feathers and risk an attack in Rome or another Italian city?
