JERUSALEM - Papal envoy to Israel Archbishop Pietro Sambi was summoned to the Foreign Ministry where officials registered their displeasure at the statements of Pope Benedict XXVI.
Pope condemns terror everywhere except in Israel

The pope on Sunday condemned terrorism in Iraq, Egypt, Turkey and Britain, but leaves out the suicide bombing in Netanya.
Foreign Ministry officials expressed outrage over the exclusion: "The evasion of the pope begs a response. Besides the assault on morality, the matter cannot be interpreted as anything but the justification as terror against Jews."
The sources also said that the pope's words would strengthen the hands of radicals.
"We hoped the new Pope, who talked about relations between the church and the Jewish people," said the officials.
"We expected that the pope would call for dialogue among the three religions that recognize Abraham as their father and would criticize terror that has brutally struck Jews when criticizing terror that has affected others."
Sambi met with Nimrod Barkan for a few hours; the papal envoy did not say how the Vatican answered or planned to answer the charge

Agreed. If it's part of a pattern, that would be a different story.
Screw you!!!
First, I'm still single, so you know where to cram that gratuitous insult of yours.
Second, if you really understood the background, as you so smugly declare, you'd realize that membership in the HJ was COMPULSORY for every German male age 14 and older. Pope Benedict never agreed with the ideology, and he joined only to spare his father any trouble with the Nazi regime.
Third, you shouldn't show up in these threads with such facetiousness. It can bite your ass!!!
And about that clue: Here's a quarter. Buy it.
Actually, what I find interesting is that if the French Foreign Ministry had put out the same statement, there would be a lot more unreserved condemnation here on FR. These things are all in the eye of the beholder, I guess.
So you were probably drooling and blindly staring nowhere when His Holiness Pope JP II apologized for the Church not having a proactive stance during the Holocaust.
And yes, you're the knee-jerk when you equal Catholic = Anti-Jew.
And you can be sure that I'll defend my faith and my Church from all the gratuitous attacks I unfortunately have to see here at FR...
Tsk tsk, so hostile. I told you first that they were all members of Hitler Youth because they had to be, if you check above. And if you can't take the gratuitous insults, I respectfully suggest you not initiate them. I would guess I have more practice at it.
What purpose does it serve to lump the Roman Catholic Church with a bunch of state institutions purporting to be religions, and in the case of the Russian Orthodox Church, aided and abetted tyranny in different stages of Russian history???
Regarding the Roman Catholic Church as an anti-Jewish institution nowadays is like if Great Britain was still regarded as an empire.
And if you can't take the gratuitous insults, I respectfully suggest you not initiate them.
Exhibit 1: Gratuitous Insult
Guess you can't beat the German out of these guys. Maybe those cries about Ratzinger being a Hitler Youth weren't that far off base.
The Verdict:
First-degree hypocrisy.
The Sentence:
Shut the hell up.
Verdict: Over your head in the first degree
So... do you know the actual reason the Pope might have omitted Israel from the list???
If it was a conscious omission, I'll join your condemnation.
But, since there's not evidence pointing to that, you might've shot your mouth too soon...
I would guess it's for the same reason that the UK media pretends that terror against Israel is different than terror against Europeans - that Jew-killing is so commonly accepted as justified, it doesn't even occur to them that there's a connection.
Has this Pope manifested any anti Israeli sentiments? I don't know of any.
On the other hand, Tony Blair, and his Government has bludgeoned Israel repeatedly and also left out Israel when discussing terror.
Why doesn't Israel have the guts to call Blair on his behavior?
ZENIT - The World Seen From Rome -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Code: ZE05072505 Date: 2005-07-25 Terrorists Not Attacking Christians, Assures Pope INTROD, Italy, JULY 25, 2005 (Zenit.org).
"- Benedict XVI said that he wouldn't label the recent wave of terrorist attacks that hit London, Turkey and Egypt as acts against Christianity. Journalists asked the Holy Father today, after a meeting with priests, religious and deacons of the Diocese of Val d'Aosta, where is on vacation, if the attacks could be considered "bombs against Christianity." "I think that on the whole they are responding to a more general intention, and are not specifically against Christianity," he said. Asked if Islam can be regarded as a "religion of peace," Benedict XVI responded: "I wouldn't like to generalize. It certainly has elements that could make peace prevail; it also has other elements." "We must always try to identify the best elements," he said.
Now, look at the context in which the Pope made his remarks. Reporters asked the Pope if the recent attacks should be viewed as attacks on Christians. Its obvious the Pope's remarks citing Turkey, Egypt and London were in response to this question. Not surprisingly, in answering a question concerning attacks on Christians he DID NOT mention Israel. Since the attacks in Israel, I'm sure we all agree, are attacks on Jews.
You bigots have taken remarks made by the Pope in response to a reporter's question and twisted them out of context. Moreover, it appears the Israeli Foreign Ministry has chosen to do the same.
He is no John Paul II.
see my post 34
You are referring to a news conference that took place on MONDAY. The remarks by the Pope which people have had concerns about took place in a different context, at a prayer service that took place on SUNDAY.
If you want to get us bigots straightened out, you need to get your context and chronologies right.
And jeopardize their billions in foreign aid?
I have a keychain with a gold coin on it that has John Paul II on one side and Mary and baby Jesus on the other... I carry it with me all the time, it's got my house and car keys on it. Some anti-Catholic bigot I am; perhaps I ought to try harder to meet your expectations?
These days of peace and rest have also been disturbed by the tragic news of the execrable terrorist attacks, which have caused death, destruction and suffering in several countries, such as Egypt, Turkey, Iraq and Great Britain. While entrusting to divine goodness the deceased, the wounded and their loved ones, victims of such gestures that offend God and man, we invoke the Almighty to stop the murderous hand of those who, moved by fanaticism and hatred, have committed them and to convert their hearts to thoughts of reconciliation and peace."
Its clear he's talking about events which have occurred while he's been on vacation. These remarks are side remarks, offered after the primary focus of his address. Netanya, granted, happened virtually the day he left for vacation. However, the attacks in Britain, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt have all come within, what, the last week or so. Hence, he's simply trying to address recent events which have occurred while he has been on vacation quickly. Again, you are taking his remarks out of context. Twisting them to suit your own agenda.
And, again, the Israeli Foreign Ministry is doing the same. Food for thought the next time the Israeli government chooses to issue its policy through their foreign ministry.
