Hispanic, Islamic Groups Want Tancredo Out

By STEVEN K. PAULSON
Associated Press Writer

Hispanic and Islamic groups called on Rep. Tom Tancredo to resign Monday, saying he has embarrassed Colorado by suggesting bombing Islamic holy sites if terrorists launch a nuclear attack on the U.S.

They also criticized the GOP congressman's staunch advocacy of tougher immigration controls.

"Enough is enough. We're here to say 'Stop,'" Hispanic activist Manolo Gonzalez-Estay told a crowd of about 200 at the state Capitol.

Abdur-Rahim Ali, imam of a Muslim shrine in Denver, said Tancredo's statement that "you could take out" Islamic holy sites in a retaliatory attack was unacceptable.

"What would happen if a prominent Muslim made that statement about Catholic holy places like the Vatican?" asked Ali.

Tancredo was traveling and unavailable for comment. His spokesman, Will Adams, said the four-term congressman has no intention of apologizing or resigning.

"They are a lot more upset about what he stands for, our nation's security and border policy, than anything else," Adams said.

Anybody know if this guy was a member of the "Religion of Peace?

Twenty years ago, on the afternoon of May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II was struck by three bullets while being driven in a slow-moving convertible through St. Peter's Square, where 20,000 people had gathered to see the pontiff. Rushed to a hospital, the pope barely survived a six-hour operation. Two bystanders were also injured in the attack. The would-be assassin, 23-year-old Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca, was immediately apprehended at the scene of the crime. The police found in his pocket several notes scribbled in Turkish, one of which read: "I am killing the pope as a protest against the imperialism of the Soviet Union and the United States and against the genocide that is being carried out in El Salvador and Afghanistan."

My guess is that if a city is nuked, a fair number of revered holy places for many Christians would be destroyed. Since an act like this would be an act of war, why wouldn't we be justified by retaliating in the fashion Tancredo discussed?

The real key question is why aren't these moderate Muslims rooting out of their midst the small % of idiots perpetrating terror and causing so much grief and mayhem? If they were to do so immediately there would be no need for all this rhetoric and hand-wringing.

Arab terrorist has already tried to assassinate the Pope, and as a matter of fact, Islamofascists have already said they were going to take over the Vatican.

Interesting how terrorism an open borders are making strange bed fellows.

Are you suggesting that illegal alien apologists and Islamic terrorists have a natural affinity for each other.?

Shocking! /sarc

It's funny GWB hasn't noticed this.

I don't know. Turkey is about the most secularized of Moslem-majority countries, and I think he's been established pretty firmly that Agca was working for the Communists.

If the Pope perpetrates a nuclear attack on Saudi Arabia, the Muslims should feel free to retaliate by taking out the Sistine Chapel, OK?
