Preliminary Earthquake Report

A major earthquake occurred at 15:42:05 (UTC) on Sunday, July 24, 2005. The magnitude 7.0 event has been located in the NICOBAR ISLANDS, INDIA REGION. (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.)

Nicobars - affected by last year's tsunami. 7.0 - borderline strong enough to generate tsunamis. Let's hope it was under the borderline.

Local news here in Thailand is going nuts over this. From what I understand, they have evacuated coastal areas like Phuket already just in case.

Wow. The Tsunami in December was caused by a 9.0 mag in almost the same place. They also noted a 5.6 mag yesterday.

I hope they are providing adequate notice to people in the region to keep an eye open for tsunami.

Then again, after December 26th, I doubt they've stopped thinking about tsunamis.

Thai news reporting the water level has dropped some in the coastal areas. It is nowhere near what happened during the December tsunami but they are not lifting the warning yet.

The 6.1 in the Kermadec Island region of New Zealand, then the another 6.1 very close to the center of Tokyo, this 7.2. in the Nicobar Islands, plus a 6.6 centered about 33 kilometers below the Banda AcehSea. A very active weekend.
