Immigration Rising on Bush's To-Do List The White House wants to build a coalition to court Latinos and marginalize hard-liners. By Peter Wallsten and Nicole Gaouette, Times Staff Writers WASHINGTON — Worried that the tone of the immigration debate is pushing Latinos away from the Republican Party, the White House is working with political strategists to create a broad coalition of business groups and immigrant advocates to back a plan President Bush could promote in Congress and to minority voters in the 2006 elections.

Um, Mr. PResident, how about just ENFORCING EXISTING IMMIGRATION LAWS? And calling illegal aliens what they are: Criminals.

Yes, simply because DeLay seems to have entered this debate on the side of enforcement and a "temporary" guest worker program. I tend to believe that DeLay represents the position of teh White House. Even the article says that they think Bush probably supports the Ky/Cornyn Bill in private.

If I were Bush, I would just sell that Kyl/Cornyn Bill the best I can. It is actually not bad, and it should appeal to everody except for the open-borders lobby.

True. WH strategery is most likely to some degree designed not to woo latinos (a rather marginal voting block), but rather soccer moms who are put off by the "harshness" of anti-immigration rethoric, etc.

It is important to remember that a lot of the "immigration debate" really isn't about immigration at all - it's about posing in order to come across as "nice" and "non-racist".

"I doubt this an issue that is going to come down to repubs vs. democrats."

There are 3 immigration reform/guest worker bill in Congress. Left of center is Kennedy-McCain. Right of center is Coryn-Kyle. Far right is Tancredo-Inhofe. Delay has proposed(but not introduced) a two step reform that puts adequate enforcement in place and then would create a guest worker plan(likely similar to Coryn-Kyl).

Which bill do you think the dems will be voting for?

But wait, I forgot to mention the plan most popular at FR. Deport all the illegals and build a 25 foot high fence with mine fields and machine gun turrets every 50 yards. There are also some freepers in this group that think anyone with a hispanic name should be deported even if thay are citizens or attorney general. These mexicans are not needed in the US under any condition.

I doubt this is an issue that is going to come down to repubs vs democrats.

Illegal Immigration will be a major issue in the '08 election. HClinton has already staked a position, and in all probability, she will be the Dem nominee. If the GOP can't counter her stand against Illegal Immigration, the GOP hands her the election.

If another major terrorist attack happens before '08 as a result of illegals who came in either through Canada or Mexico, GWB's legacy will be lower than that of x42. GWB's Presidency might not survive a major terror attack perpetrated by illegals.

The main problem is that any step taken will be demonized by the democrats. And whipped into a frenzy of republican bashing.

Yes, it will be whipped into a frenzy of Republican bashing, by what other than the major newspaper and television outlets in this country.

Oh, what will we do? What we should do is attend the next Federal Communications Commission hearings on the renewal of the licenses of ABC, NBC and CBS. I think it will be relatively easy to show the networks political bias and just cause why these billion dollar free licenses should be turned over to owners who do not want to destroy this country and are interested in its welfare.

If we were smart, we would all get behind Kyl/Cornyn on this one. Let's not forget, they are two powerful people in the Senate, and I believe that Cornyn is the right hand man of Bush on this issue, at least behind closed doors. So, if we are serious about this, that is what we should be supporting. The key is to sell it well.

Our immigration laws are being ignored and laughed at. Instead of enforcing the law the politicians respond with more laws and more bureaucracy. What a bunch of CRAP. Check out the Constitution party's web site. We need a third political party representing the interests of LEGAL Americans.

Plus, DeLay seems to be in the same neighborhood as well.

No need to get so specific with fence length and protection level - we are more than willing to leave that detail to the professionals.

Though I agree with what you are saying, getting behind a third party is the worst thing we can do. We need to get the conservative base active and in support of reasonable reform, such as the Kyl/Cornyn Bill. As much as I like tancredo, it would probably be more helpful if we tone down his rehetoric in public, and lobby other politicians behind the scenes.

I do like your thinking.

OUTRAGEOUS! Bush wants to have a Mexican, Canadian, and American coalition. I can't understand those that blindly support this president. This is the number one issue facing our country. If you want your standard of living to get worse keep voting for these globolists. Vote Tancredo or the constitution party before it is to late.

I hate to give you the bad news, but Coryn-Kyl doesn't have a chance of passing. The dems won't vote for it, nor will Tancredo's Immigration Caucus vote for it.

The only thing that will pass is McCain-Kennedy because there are enough pubs who will join the dems. The only thing preventing this is republican leadership not allowing the bill onto the floor of the House and Senate.

As we say in Texas, its a Mexican Stand-off.

Those congressmen who decide to pander to the Latino's should lose their office Democrat or Republican.

"(Including Jeorge W Bush)"

Ah, you spelled it wrong. It should be Jorge.

How come he's so sympathetic to illegal Mexicans living in America? Must be connection somewhere.

If the White House sells us out like this, then we deserve to be called the party of Corporate America.
-----
A. We already have been sold out.
B. The illegals will not be touched if Bush (and the Congress) continues to have his way.
C. We will be forced to pay for it, as we are now.
D. The DOUBLE STANDARD OF LAWS in this country will get worse.
E. American citizenship will become a joke.
F. Our borders on maps will become dotted lines, instead of solid lines.
G. The Presidential oath will be re-written to include the PROTECTION OF FOREIGN INVADERS...and a new amendment will be added to the Constitution applying its rights to the whole world.

Just a look at the real consequences of supporting illegal invasion of our country. And that is the short list.

Every key player in this battle, both in office and out of office, say that McCain/kennedy has virtually no chance of passing. All of these bills go to the same committee, and most people are saying we will end up with some variation of the Kyl/Cornyn Bill.
