Man shot was not linked to London terror attacks 23/07/2005 - 17:45:46
The man shot dead by police in south London yesterday is not connected to attempted terror attacks on the capital, Scotland Yard said today.
For somebody to lose their life in such circumstances is a tragedy and one that the Metropolitan Police Service regrets, said a spokesman.
The fatal shooting happened in Stockwell at 10am yesterday when armed plain clothes police officers shot a man as he tried to board a train at the underground station.
He had emerged from a nearby house that was under surveillance because of a suspected link to Thursdays attempted bomb attacks on three Tube trains and a bus.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was then followed by surveillance officers.
He is thought to have caught a bus to Stockwell Tube station where he was challenged by officers, who told him to stop.
The man, who is believed to be of South American appearance, then bolted down an escalator, according to witnesses.
He apparently tried to get on a train before he was, according to witnesses, shot five times in the head by an officer with an automatic pistol.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair had said yesterday that the shooting was directly linked to anti-terror operations.
However, in a statement, Scotland Yard said today: We believe we now know the identity of the man shot at Stockwell Underground station by police on Friday, July 22, although he is still subject to formal identification.
We are now satisfied that he was not connected with the incidents of Thursday, July 21, 2005.

Not just the shooting but the running away.
Correct. I was not making a comment on the person killed but commenting to the original poster that he had modified the headline to represent something that was not supported by the story.
You're right. I hope they show it. It would quiet it the press if he was acting suspicious.
So, why was he running?
Thanks for the clarification. You were right, I should have followed the thread more closely.
Not connected my a$$. He emerges from a house tied into the terrorist network. Upon contact with law who tells him to stop his first instinct is to flee and flee onto a train ?
He was guilty of something but we may never know what.
Body shots are not considered in the case of those suspected of carrying bombs. Standard anti-terror tactics. Associate with know terrorists (strike one), act suspicious (strike two) run from the cops into a subway station (strike three) You are OUT!
Not a house, an apt. building. They could have mistaken him for someone else if he was acting suspiciously.
I would agree with that.
You are thinking in terms of the tactical situation.
However, strategically, in the War on Terror it was a huge negative. Terror consists in committing violent acts in order to modify the masses attitudes through the media.
In this case, the police have committed a violent act that will be a huge public relations problem for them, and it sets back the War on Terror.
In a War, the objective is to win the battles, not to keep individual soldiers alive.
I agree. I'm not crying over this. Let it send a message--you run from the cops during wartime, in a train depot, during a time when people are bombing trains, then you brought it on yourself.
Moreover, I still think this guy was working for the terrorists. Maybe not linked to the recent bombings, but some kind of decoy.
It will be as negative as the press whips it up and the people fall for it.
There is no such thing as a perfect defense or offense. Life includes some risk of being "collateral loss."
Here's another story. I don't know if it's true or not, but found it in a google of "israel" "bomber" "shot"
SUSPECTED BOMBER SHOT OUTSIDE ISRAEL'S UZBEK EMBASSYOne point is that collateral damage happens. It isn't the rule, it isn't desireable, but it is inevitable because it is impossible to have perfect discernment.

By: ICEJ NewsSimulated suicide belt re-awakens fears last year's triple blasts A suspected suicide bomber was shot and killed Friday morning outside the Israeli embassy in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent as unrest racked the eastern part of the country with thousands protesting the trial of 23 prominent businessmen accused of ties to an Islamic terror group. The Israeli ambassador, in a conversation with Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, confirmed a report by an Uzbek police official who said the suspect was carrying wooden objects that simulated the explosives used in a bomb belt.

Another is that the media picks and chooses which stories to whip the masses with. London makes a story. Uzbekistan does not. But the war on terror will go on. My money says the UK officials will be smart about this. Smart people learn from unfortunate incidents.

Ah, so ...
SHOOT-TO-KILL POLICY
"If you are dealing with someone who might be a suicide bomber, if they remain conscious they could trigger plastic explosives or whatever device is on them," said Mayor Ken Livingstone. "Therefore, overwhelmingly in these circumstances, it is going to be a shoot-to-kill policy."
The shooting took place about 10 a.m., when jittery commuters spotted a man, who witnesses said appeared to be a South Asian, wearing a padded coat in the Stockwell subway station in south London.
Police chased him into a subway car, pinned him to the ground and shot him in the head and torso, an eyewitness said.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair said the shooting was "directly linked" to the investigation.
"The man who was shot was under police observation because he had emerged from a house that was itself under observation, because it was linked to the investigation of yesterday's incidents," police said in a statement.
"He was then followed by surveillance officers to the station. His clothing and his behaviour at the station added to their suspicions."
Stockwell is just one stop away from the Oval subway station, site of one of Thursday's four failed attacks exactly two weeks after the July 7 suicide bombings killed 52 people.
"I've seen these police officers shouting, 'Get down, get down!', and I've seen this guy who appears to have a bomb belt and wires coming out," witness Anthony Larkin told the BBC.
Another train passenger, Mark Whitby, said the man didn't appear to be carrying anything but that his coat looked padded.

Maybe it was a Muzzi carrying this guys ID? Either that or he really was the Brazilian, but had other activities besides his electrician activities.
The question remains, "why did he run". An interviewee on Fox, is saying he, the Brazilian, had lived in England for 5 years and his English comprehension was just fine.
Not for the municipal government of London. Just like us, they have their political police leadership and liberal-to-the-point-of-being-Red mayors.
